What do you do when you lose your work culture? For over 2 years, I worked at a company that had a work culture I greatly admired, enjoyed, and appreciated. There were weekly culture calls to connect with your coworkers, fun Slack channels for all sorts of topics, and an annual retreat to relax and have some fun. Leadership was accessible, important decisions were communicated, and questions were always welcome. Additionally, I truly believe I was a part of one of the best Creative Teams I’ll have the privilege of working with in my career. Then, two months ago, I was laid off. In no time at all, those weekly rhythms and supportive relationships were lost. So what do you do when you lose that structured work culture that once surrounded you? Own it. 💪🏼 Work culture isn’t about fun Slack channels or playing games together in Zoom meetings. Work culture is about surrounding yourself with genuine people who emulate shared values and offer mutual care and support as you strive towards a united goal. And that’s something you don’t need to rely on a company for. Since leaving my last role, I’ve found those things in my partner, my friends, and co-livings around the world as we’ve traveled. While I don’t technically work with them, I work alongside them - and their support, laughter, and relationships have been key in keeping me optimistic and motivated as I seek my next role and “official” work culture. #workculture #workculturematters #workculturewednesday #uxui #design #productdesign #opentowork

Senior Content Designer | UX Content Strategist | UX Writer | Video Maker | Lover of commas & keyframes
Ask me anything (about getting comfortable): ➡️ Have questions about starting a new job? I'll answer them! A few months ago, I began as a senior content designer at Chewy. I thought it may be fun to take your questions about adjusting to a new position, developing relationships, or anything else that may be on your mind about professional transitions. If you’d like to participate, leave a question as a comment on this post. You can also message me. I'll provide answers in future posts. Hope to hear from you! *** Q: Four months in, how much do you feel it's been just about getting to know the place and the people, and how much do you feel you've started to be productive and make an impact? A: This is a smart question to start this series, and I had to think about it for a bit. I’ve told multiple people this, but it feels like I’ve been in my job for longer than 4 months. When you take on a major change, you accept that you’ll manage some discomfort as you’re introduced to new people and processes. So much comes at you fast—all while you tackle project work—and everything can get packed into a brief window of time. My first 2 months were mostly about getting to know my content teammates, cross-functional partners, and weekly rhythms. I tried to learn effective ways to work with the various personalities involved. I’m not sure that effort ever ends, but I’ve made progress in developing relationships. I had a great support system in my opening weeks. Looking back, that made a huge difference as I became acclimated to my situation. I think any new hire should have a “buddy” who serves as a support figure (life raft?) when that new hire is trying to find their way. I’ve been a remote employee since 2020. I learned setting up recurring 1:1 chats with people goes a long way toward making me feel connected at work. I started those conversations rather quickly, and they continue to this day. At this point, I’m seeing some of my early projects go live. That’s exciting. I feel more comfortable when I start to develop a history within an organization. I still have a ways to go to get to where I want to be. I try to study coworkers and take pieces of them I admire, all while attempting to stay true to myself. I’d much rather be 4 months into a position than 4 weeks, though. Onward and upward! (Thanks to Jörgen Kjellgren for the question!) #UXWriting #ContentDesign #ContentStrategy

AI-Enabled VA Agency | Co-Founder 2xYou | Certified AI Consultant | We hire & train AI-enabled Executive Assistants with a custom business operating system | 100 Most Influential Filipino Women| Stevie Awardee | Speaker
The biggest thing I'm grateful for this 2023? That I actually now have a team. For the first 2 years of 2xYou, I was running around like a headless chicken, working with both clients and our virtual assistants. I was wearing too many hats, as most founders are at the beginning. It took having most of our assistants leaving because we didn't have the management to support them to finally get me to bite the bullet and hire our first manager. We quickly got to 3 managers, and someone who takes care of our clients in the best way possible, and hiring for more. Today we had an all-hands-on-deck meeting as we prepped for 2024, and I kept trying not to be hard on myself for not having certain structures in the business. It's because I didn't have a team. And now I do. People who see value in 2xYou and what we do and enjoy working with our clients and virtual assistants. They're all freaking smart, have amazing hearts, and the kind of people who will light up a room by entering it. The first time I got 8 clients in a month I freaked out, because I didn't have a team to help me carry through. Now I know if we get 10 clients next week, I've got people and systems who can get me through. Grateful doesn't even begin to describe the feeling So if you're looking to actually grow your business and not just run it, maybe it's time to start thinking about what kind of people you want to support you to do it.

Building Small, Diverse, Empowered, and Connected Teams: Fostering Diversity and Inclusion 🚀 Today, we’re going to dive deep into the first game-changing technique to build small, diverse, empowered, and connected teams: Fostering Diversity and Inclusion. 🌍👥 1-Diverse Recruitment 📝: Think of it like making a fruit salad. You want a mix of flavors, right? It’s the same with your team. Try to bring in people with different skills and backgrounds. For instance, if you’re hiring for a tech startup, don’t just look at candidates with tech backgrounds. Maybe someone with a background in art or history could bring a fresh perspective to your team! 2-Inclusive Culture 🤝: This is about making sure everyone feels welcome and heard. It’s like hosting a party. You want all your guests to feel comfortable and enjoy themselves. In a team setting, this could mean having regular team meetings where everyone gets a chance to speak or creating a suggestion box where team members can share their ideas anonymously. And now for the fun part - a game! 🎲 Diversity Bingo: Imagine a bingo card, but instead of numbers, it has unique characteristics or experiences. Maybe one square says “Speaks more than one language” and another says “Has lived in another country”. Each team member gets a card and the goal is to find a teammate who matches each square. It’s a fun way to learn more about each other! Remember, these aren’t just theories - they’re practical techniques that you can start using today. So, why wait? Start building your dream team now! 🚀 #teambuilding #diversity #inclusion #empowerment #connectedteams #innovation #fungames #diversitybingo
