On the upside, it’s also a vibrant market. Demand is expanding, as more and more businesses seek to make payments across geographic boundaries and across platforms. “For a fintech like us, there are a tremendous number of things that we need to take into consideration,” Kieran Draper, CEO USA B4B Payments - A Banking Circle Group Company said. “The transactions need to be secure, we have to be compliant in multiple jurisdictions, and the solution needs to be auditable. Some takeaways I had from this PCN Payments Beat podcast with Deborah Baxley and Hitender Sachdeva: * Every country is working on digitalization, and this digital connection can reach people even in the remotest areas, enabling financial inclusion * SWIFT won't go away, but can exist with instant payments for standardized, secure cross-border transactions. It can help improve buyer/supplier relationships with increased transparency * UPI with its digitized payments and QR codes eliminate the 3-5% processing fee, reduce friction, and increase liquidity in the market as merchants have funds instantly * Established banks have a dependency on inflexible legacy systems that are still a challenge, costly and time consuming to address - need to deploy an incremental approach to address * Cybersecurity continues to be a concern - modern systems are attractive targets, particularly irrevocable instant payments. Banks must apply a multi-layer approach, pen testing, and customer awareness programs. * ISO20022 gaining widespread adoption provides enriched data that can solve reconciliation/information challenges both domestically and cross-border * Open banking for use cases of the future: instant financing, bill payment, refund via ecommerce (instant refunds), sustainable banking
