Originating around 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece's Peloponnese region, the Olympic Games will make its way to Paris this year for it’s 33rd edition, attracting nearly 10,000 athletes. The Summer Games, scheduled to commence on July 26, will feature 329 medal events across 32 sports.  Being one of the most viewed sporting events in the world, brands across various sectors have seized this opportunity to align with the event, leveraging partnerships with the International Olympic Committee and the Paris Organizing Committee. While most of the EUR 7 billion in private funding for the Paris 2024 Games comes from media rights, sponsorship and ticketing, private investment in long-term infrastructure projects, it also includes an IOC contribution of USD 1.7 billion in cash and services. The US has an opportunity to dominate the Paris #Olympics, projected to win 123 medals, according to Nielsen's Gracenote Sports. However, the gold-medal count will be closer with the US projected to win 37 golds to China's 36. This forecast follows the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where the US and China finished 1-2 in both overall and gold medal counts. 5️⃣1️⃣ Days to Go! Since the 1912 Games, no one has shared an Olympic track and field gold medal. Finally, during the 2020 Tokyo Games, Italian Gianmarco Tamberi and the Qatari Mutaz Barshim changed that. Instead of facing each other in a jump-off, they proposed to share the gold medal for the men’s high jump – and, surprisingly, their proposition was accepted. More than a story of shared victory, this is a celebration of friendship and taking risks to do what feels right. Tamberi and Barshim were friends outside the field of play for over a decade. They supported each other through injuries that threatened their careers, including one that obliged Tamberi to withdraw from the 2016 Rio Games. A shared medal was another step in acting out their friendship, not a diplomatic or marketing move. The event made global headlines as one of the most inspiring moments of the Tokyo Games – and maybe of Olympic history. It is also an illustrative example of the paradigm that has been gaining more and more space in the 21st century: collaborative leadership. A paradigm that sees leadership as the result of people sharing their talents and complementing each other, and not of extraordinary individuals governing the ordinary ones. The Hangzhou Asian Games achieved a grand reunion for the Olympic Council of Asia, with the largest number of participants in history As Asia's highest standard international comprehensive sports event, the upcoming 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou will have delegates from 45 Asian countries and regions. According to the registration situation, the Hangzhou Asian Games achieved a great reunion of the Asian Olympic Council, the size of the Games and the number of participants have reached a record high, with more than 12,500 athletes participating. Among them, six delegations from China, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, India and Hong Kong signed up more than 600 people. "Heart and Heart, Aida Future." At the Asian Games, which is the largest in history, Hangzhou will build a platform for sports exchanges, cultural exchanges and emotional exchanges among Asian athletes. Many people may wonder why this sporting event was not fully attended by 48 countries in Asia. Not all countries and regions in Asia are members of the Asian Olympic Council, which has 45 members, including 42 national Olympic committees and three regional Olympic committees (Taipei, Hong Kong, and Macau). Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Cyprus, Turkey and Israel are not members of the Asian Olympic Council and are not eligible to participate in the Asian Games. Of course, those who qualify for the Asian Games may not be able to participate in all events, such as Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is a member of the Asian Olympic Council, but the Kazakhstan Football Association is a member of UEFA, meaning that Kazakhstan's sports delegation can participate in the Asian Games but cannot compete in the Asian Games football program. On October 1st and 2nd 2023, the 11th International Athletes’ Forum (IAF) brought together over 400 athlete representatives in Lausanne to discuss the most important issues for athletes across the Olympic Movement. Topics ranged from safe sport, the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024, the participation of individual neutral athletes with a Russian or Belarussian passport in international competitions during the qualification period, the situation of athletes from countries and regions affected by the too many wars and conflicts around the world; the digitalisation of sport, the growing popularity of esports; the inclusion of new sports in the Olympic programme; cooperation with the Deaflympics; the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 as an event for the entire African continent; and safeguarding and protection for athletes. Keynote Concept: What makes the Olympic Games such an important event worldwide? What is the gravitational pull that brings people from five continents together? Why are the Olympics popular? What do the Olympic Games mean to you? There are three guiding principles followed by the International Olympic Committee. These principles are the foundation of sport and competition. They are so pure of intent that they are impossible to refute but a daily struggle to uphold. 1️⃣ International understanding. Our global economy is an interconnected network of cultures brought together. The Olympics represent this in a forum of sport. 2️⃣ Fair play. Competition, in its purest form, is a person or team competing fairly and honestly. The Olympics send a message to everyone: Be honest, be fair, play by the rules, be ethical. 3️⃣ Striving for Excellence. Contrary to national pride and an obsession with 🥇🥈🥉medal counts, for the athletes it is not just about being the best. It is about striving for personal excellence. In the early 1990's, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) enacted Rule 40 of the Olympic Charter, which subjected Olympic athletes to disciplinary action, including potential stripping of medals, if any non-Olympic sponsor mentioned the athlete's name or showed their image immediately prior to and/or during the Olympic Games. In 2019, the IOC updated Rule 40 and established a set of "Key Principles" setting out how athletes can engage in, and benefit from, commercial activities around the Games. These Principles have been further confirmed in 2023 and shall apply for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. It is yet to be seen whether the IOC will propose further amendments ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
