A timely and important article on shifting PR and comms strategies in the tech sector when budgets tighten. Thanks Jonathan Owen and PRWeek UK for including my views and Tyto PR perspective on this changing environment. One of the unique challenges spending cuts have on the tech industry is that companies in this space often aspire to be global from day one. When budgets are hit by a 20-30% cut traditional global agency models or hand-picked best of breed networks are unable to flex and adapt. So if you're really advanced and mature when it comes to your PR & Comms Measurement, this post probably isn't for you. Today's hot take is about KPIs in PR & Comms Measurement. Answering questions like - What are common key performance indicators? We do a lot of media analysis on brand reputation, analysis of audiences and whether messaging is having intended impact or influence. It's often the case that big data (media monitoring & social listening) needs to be distilled down to a few actionable insights. Yet the process of doing so begins with highlighting metrics like Reputational Drivers, Key Messaging, Authors, Audiences, Publications and more. Ultimately you want to not just track these media centric, content based KPIs only. You want to be able to tie into impact and broader organizational objectives. Tying in other data sources like HR, Finance, Sales, etc. to help correlate how PR & Comms efforts have knock on effects across the org. That's how you quantify the value of your PR & Comms efforts.
