In the world of biotech hiring, think of it like precision medicine. 👩🔬 Every candidate's different... each with their own set of worries. So, when you're looking for someone to join your biotech or life sciences startup, remember to consider what might be going through their heads. Recently, I've noticed that when I mention Moxee's focus on biotech / life sciences startups, many candidates express a preference for larger, more "stable" companies due to the volatility in VC funding and layoffs. You can think about and address potential concerns internally to increase: [1] Acceptance rates [2] Retention Take this ‘Omics company I'm recruiting for in a remote part of Europe. They had to go remote to find their three bioinformaticians. Before I met with them, they weren’t equipped to make remote colleagues feel part of the team. They were out of sight, AND out of sync. 😢 If they'd just thought a bit about what might be bugging their bioinformaticians about the job or working remotely... maybe they wouldn't have lost all three scientists in just 5 months. Talk about a waste of time, energy, and money for the entire team. Does a misjudged hire sound familiar? Could it be that in your rush to fill skills gaps and roles quickly, you're overlooking the needs and concerns of those who are the core of everything you’re trying to achieve? P.S. - it’s much easier to know the general reservations whilst working with a recruiter who seeks to understand what’s concerning candidates in your exact domain. *Ahem*, that's me. Biotech employees moving to Tech isn’t just a trend. It’s a serious problem. The flock from biotech to tech is caused by: • Compensation • No requirement for a cursory biology knowledge… on top of everything else (depending on the interdisciplinary nature of your team) • Geographical limitations • The failure rate of biotech startups • Scalability and development time • Greater marketing and distribution flexibility • Limited resources since TechBio employees (typically) make up a small section of the company • Legacy software (cough, large Pharma 😅) With over 192,000 tech #layoffs this year, we must do a better job at communicating the benefits. Of those who DO move to TechBio... it usually boils down to one thing: The work is more meaningful. There’s nothing more rewarding than creating a product with the opportunity to save lives. And the coolest part? We've barely scratched the surface in terms of AI /ML / #TechBio applications.
