We're highlighting our interns for National Intern Day! Bryce Mayden is our intern from Hanover College and has been working with our Economic Development team this summer. 1. What is your favorite project that you've worked on at 1si so far this summer? My favorite project was researching the local economy (i.e., real GDP throughout the last 20 years, unemployment rates, housing costs, etc.) 2. What is your most memorable experience from this summer? Our everyday conversations in the office have been the most memorable experiences this summer. 3. What are your hobbies outside of work/school? My big hobby outside of work/school is soccer; I love playing pickup, training on my own, and watching games on TV.

A few months ago, we spoke with Carla Kersey, Project Development Coordinator at Kentucky Educational Development Corporation, who supports HS students through project-based internships. Here's a highlight from our conversation: "Project Based Learning is so much more than hands-on experiences in the classroom; it's also about workforce development." Discover how PBL can enhance teaching and learning and contribute to vital workforce development in our PBL Spotlights: PBL in Career & Tech Education, where National Faculty members share their perspectives on PBL & CTE. Q: Describe your initial perspective of the career you are interning at. After being an intern there for a few weeks, how have your beliefs changed, and what are they currently? A: When I first started my internship doing math intervention at the elementary school I wondered how effective that classroom situation really was and if it would actually help the students catch up to where they were supposed to be. I didn’t really understand how it worked and how to best help the kids understand. Now that Ive been at the elementary school for awhile I’ve been able to see how effective intervention is. I’ve seen the kids we work with grow so much and watching them start to really understanding something is one of my big highlights. Giving the kids a space where they can catch up outside the pressure of a classroom that might make them feel like they’re constantly falling behind us super important and really beneficial.

A direct quote from the NACE Position statement: "Particularly troubling, NACE research has also found that all college students are not equitably represented in internships (Inequity in Internships, NACE, 2021). According to survey data, women, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation students were underrepresented in paid internships. In 2022, NACE followed up on that initial analysis and the internship data from 187 employers demonstrated nearly identical inequities. Again, women, Black, and Hispanic students were significantly underrepresented as a proportion of paid interns. Taken together, the research shows that white, male, and continuing generation students are disproportionally overrepresented in paid internships. Providing more paid internships for underrepresented populations will lead to greater access, opportunity, and success for participating students; help fill critical roles throughout the employment landscape; and lead to needed diversification of the workforce." Internships are a high-impact practice that colleges and universities should be paying significant attention to and identifying action steps to close equity gaps.
NACE Director of Research and Public Policy Mary Gatta recently spoke with NPR and WBUR's Here & Now about our position statement advocating for all internships to be paid and the actions we believe Congress must take to make this a reality. https://ow.ly/j4oJ50Pq5HK

HBCU courses often emphasize community engagement, leadership, and social justice, fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and pride among students. The curriculum typically includes general education requirements, major-specific courses, and opportunities for research, internships, and experiential learning. HBCUs are known for their supportive environments, smaller class sizes, and faculty dedicated to student success and mentorship. This unique combination helps students achieve academic excellence while preparing them for professional careers and civic involvement. 1.833.364.3422 (1.833.3NID-HCA)

In this episode of The Rural Voice, we interview Todd Cordrey, the Superintendent of Mancos School District, about project-based learning. In School Year 2020/21, the Mancos Board of Education worked to formalize its strategic plan. Teachers and Parents identified project-based learning that would facilitate long-term learning and apply to the workforce. Cordrey highlighted the importance of student-based learning, where students facilitate active learning by finding their voice in their education. Moreover, businesses are seeking ownership of projects. This opens the opportunity for internships for students scheduling student experiences beyond the classroom. https://ow.ly/BPpe50PSVZr
