Rolux USA I've been reading a lot recently about South African companies being given advice about entering the US market and our take on it may help some of you. I have really enjoyed the informal chats I've had with people who are looking at the US market and in particular sharing the mistakes we made and are making. There were/are plenty. School fees are payable in any new market and whether you pay it up front in market research or as you go along through bad judgement calls, they are payable. At the risk of over simplification, the US market is the same as any other market. Sure, it's vast and the potential is enormous but you still need to get the basics right. A product people want, at a price they are prepared to pay which leaves enough for you to make a fair return. We didn't have the budget for formal market research and with hindsight I'm glad we didn't. A trade show in St. Louis (as visitors) was as far as our budget stretched. We spent hours asking questions and listening to people in our industry. We were not there to sell, we were there to learn. Over the ensuing few months we talked to anyone that would talk to us and made some great connections that have really helped when the going got hard. There have been challenges we didn't bargain for. When you're talking to wide awake customers at 3am local time it's a challenge. Imperial measurements: What does 3/16 of an inch look like? UPS: They don't treat your parcel with the respect you get from your local courier service. Spelling: It's different. We are largely operating in Southern, Central US and my personal take away is that the people we are dealing with are simply wonderful. If you get your customer service bang on, they will support you - and understand your mistakes. So if you are thinking of selling your product in the US don't be overwhelmed by the size of the market. Be encouraged. Remember that at Rolux we sell stuff, not financial services. Stuff that people see, feel, use and park in their garage. There's a connection to our brand. Make sure that you support your brand and live it. The people we are dealing with love access to us. They don't like call centres and especially robotic replies. As South African's we are world class at making people feel good and creating good times. It's our super power. So don't send a blanket e mail, invite them over for a braai,
