What have you created with Midjourney, Dall-E, or another AI tool? In their article, Sarah Gibbons and Tarun Mugunthan explore user experiences with image-generation tools. They identify two primary user goals: inspiration-oriented (conceptual ideas) and deliverable-oriented (polished outputs). ImageGen AI users typically navigate four stages: 1. Define - Understanding goals and strategies 2. Explore - Producing a variety of images 3. Refine - Adjusting prompts to perfect outcomes 4. Export - Finalizing touches For designers of ImageGen products, understanding these creative processes is crucial. It highlights user pain points and areas for enhancement, allowing for more tailored and efficient tools. Curious about their findings? Still working on this- I feel like anything I generate gets lost in the refine phase, whereas images worthy of export are almost always accidental.
Good to know!

1wI definitely see myself in this! Thinking specifically about my common ImageGen use cases (storyboards, concept sketches, and journey map illustrations etc.) l can clearly see the stages I go through in the map above. Folks need to remember than even though you’re often prompting to get the image you want, being open to other ideas and the creative avenues that ImageAI returns, can lead you to a better place. It’s not as obvious as treating ChatGPT et al as a creative [conversational] partner, but the ImageGen tools can serve that function too (if you’re open to it!)
