🌿 Strengthening Mental Health in Academia: The Role of Community of Guardians. In a recent Nature article, the importance of addressing mental health in academic settings was brought to the forefront, illustrating the need for institutions worldwide to better support students and staff coping with academic pressures. Read more about the global efforts Nature Article below: At Community of Guardians (CoGs), we resonate deeply with this mission and are actively working to implement informal support systems within the scientific community. Here’s how we are making a difference: Embracing Controlled Failures: We facilitate forums where scientists can transparently share and learn from their setbacks. This approach not only fosters scientific advancement but also helps individuals separate their self-worth from work-related failures, building resilience and trust. Promoting Transparency and Openness: By making research methodologies, data, and outcomes fully transparent, we educate and engage the community, enhancing the relevance and reliability of scientific work and its impact on mental health. Fostering Innovation Through Collaboration: We support innovative projects that bring together scientists and CoGs members to solve complex problems, portraying science as a dynamic and forward-thinking field. Building and Sustaining Dialogue: Through regular updates and interactive sessions, we ensure ongoing communication between scientists and the broader community, making science more accessible and engaging. At CoGs, we believe in a holistic approach where supporting mental health is as crucial as fostering scientific innovation. Join us in our mission to transform scientific communities into supportive environments where every member can not only thrive but contribute to a better planet! We see scientists as superhero’s leading the way to a better world! https://lnkd.in/gj6GPHsr #MentalHealthAwareness #AcademicSupport #ScienceCommunity #Mindfulness #CareerDevelopment #SustainableScience #CommunityOfGuardians #Leadership #Innovation #whatsmynumber #CoGs

Education as a coping mechanism!!
I was looking over this study from Saint Louis University, which examined the crucial link between the adversities we face in childhood (ACEs) and adulthood with our mental and cognitive health later in life. 🧠💔 These studies keep confirming the importance of understanding both adversity AND resilience. With nearly 3,500 individuals followed over 24 years, the findings showcase critical information for all of us about the long-lasting impact of stress and adversity. Here's the silver lining from this particular study: Education is highlighted as one of the strongest and most consistent factors in overcoming life's difficulties for children. 🎓✨ Higher educational attainment not only reduces the likelihood of experiencing adversities but also diminishes the negative effects of childhood adversities on cognitive health. This study is a powerful reminder of education's role in fostering resilience and combating the long-term health challenges posed by adversity. Let's remember the protective power of education and the importance of addressing stress proactively in our homes, schools, and clinics. We need to turn awareness into action and ensure that discussions about stress and adversity become a part of our daily conversations. I believe we can build a more resilient society. Intrigued by the intersection of education, mental health, and resilience? Take a look. This points to why our communities, schools, justice systems, and governments must be trauma-informed. What does the Healthy Minds research tell us? 🫀Healthy Minds has a positive impact on general health, physical health, externalising behaviours and life satisfaction - which leave a long arm into adult outcomes. 🎓Healthy Minds improves health-related outcomes without adversely affecting academic achievement, despite diverting time away from traditional academic subjects. 🏫 Evidence of lower levels of absence and fewer fixed-term exclusions, in particular amongst students receiving free school meals. Researcher - Gender, sexual and reproductive health & rights, gender and health, digital technologies and the climate crisis. | Senior Lecturer Integrated Health and Social Care
Some really good points in here about supporting researchers after a grant rejection. Given the lottery of grant success, It’d be great to see more of this type of thing instead of just support for successful grant applicants. Even a debrief post-rejection to strategically go through feedback and discuss what resubmission looks like. This should be part of internal processes and not just a nice add on. Also, funding bodies have a responsibility for researcher wellbeing here and those that do provide feedback should ensure this is constructive and points out the positives too.
Excellent advice from Manu Saunders on what universities can do to ameliorate the mental health and wellbeing effects of the academic grant treadmill. "we’re all excellent researchers. If you can produce an ARC application in full, you are a superstar, regardless of whether you win it. By promoting the damaging prestige narrative we’re implicit in gaslighting the next generation of researchers to believe they’re not good enough." #ECRChat https://lnkd.in/gQv8vd_2
