I reflected on this conversation after recording it and the need to come from a place of care and compassion for the decision makers in business and government really struggling. Despite good intentions there are structural and systemic issues that really make it challenging to operationalise ethics in an organisation. Let alone have public policy and regulations that are fit-for-purpose. But you don't need huge top down policy frameworks and extensive guidelines that are barely actionable to catalyse change. Starting with smaller commitments, changing the language and stories that are told and working to shift mindsets builds towards some fundamental cultural changes. Though the backdrop is a stark reality when it comes to passing thresholds of planetary boundaries or the "metacrisis". Can we adapt fast enough? #existentialhope

It's raw and unfiltered which was prompted after seeing some survey results from Conversica's 2023 #AIEthics and Corporate Responsibility Survey Report. Which delves into the findings of a survey of 500 US-based business owners, C-suite executives and senior leadership on their views on AI ethics and corporate responsibility. (Link to download in the comments) The result show the woeful state of #responsibleAI and is emblematic of the pervasive "ethical intent to action gap" in the tech sector and beyond. 73% of business leaders say AI guidelines are indispensable. However, just 6% have established such guidelines in their companies. But how effective are these policies and guidelines when they are actually put in place? Does it lead to behaviour and cultural change? How does this factor in the state of the world? Is it coming from a place of deep recognition of our biosphere and life on spaceship earth? The ethical implications of artificial intelligence centre on the formidable challenges of containment and regulation. While I remain excited and optimistic about AI's potential benefits, I am mindful of its disruptive influence on society and the economy. We cannot overlook the tangible risks associated with data collection and potentially biased decision-making, but we must also embrace the potential for AI to revolutionize our world for the better. We must exercise caution and vigilance when interacting with AI tools. This underscores the vital importance of critical thinking skills to interrogate and authenticate the information furnished by these AI systems. Nice overview: "Potential Harms from Automated Decision Making." by the Future of Privacy Forum This chart groups the harms identified in the literature into four broad “buckets”- loss of opportunity, economic loss, social detriment, and loss of liberty—to depict the various spheres of life where automated decision-making can cause injury. Sam Altman’s paper on ‘Moore’s Law for Everything’ (March 2021) as it relates to technology is an insightful read, which resonates with the theory of Abundance. It envisions technology’s role and its impact in shaping a world of plenty, which includes ideas on economic inclusivity, and a ‘capitalism for everyone’ approach. I bet I’m not alone in wondering if, and how, Sam’s perspective might have changed some 3 years later? A lot has happened in that time. In my view, the key question remains: ‘Are we human beings (individually and collectively) capable of responsibly ‘parenting’ a potential super intelligence? What do you think? #ai #abundance #ethics #socioeconomic #societalchange

Its a governance issue. A board with fiduciary responsibility, values and mission designed for a non profit- “for humanity” - in tandem overseeing an entity for “capped profit” and a commercial drive.
