If you've ever thought about pulling off a casino heist and you're a System Engineer, you probably possess the right qualities to execute it flawlessly without getting caught.
Here's how to do it right:
I'm, of course, joking and not encouraging any System Engineer (or anyone else) to engage in such activities, but there are some intriguing parallels between System Engineers and the intricate planning scene from that iconic movie:
Team Collaboration: Just like in the movie, System Engineers assemble a diverse team of experts, each with their unique skills and expertise.
Detailed Planning: System Engineers meticulously map out every detail of the system, from security protocols to seamless data flows.
Integration and Coordination: We emphasize the importance of ensuring that various components of a system work together harmoniously, just like the heist team.
Risk Assessment: System Engineers, similar to the heist crew, conduct thorough risk assessments to anticipate potential challenges and vulnerabilities.
Problem Solving: In both scenarios, problem-solving skills are paramount. System Engineers excel at identifying potential issues and crafting innovative solutions.
Attention to Detail: Attention to detail is the linchpin of success. Overlooking
even the smallest detail can lead to system failures or inefficiencies.
This iconic movie scene shares features highly relevant to System Engineers. I draw inspiration from this cinematic reference as I strive to demystify and illuminate the role of System Engineers, especially for the younger generation navigating the high-tech world.
Good luck! 😉

Every time I receive a new role where I need to find the best candidates to connect with the client, I dedicate several hours to research what exactly lies behind the job title. I read articles, compare technical skills, sometimes watch videos because I want to delve into the essence of that specific role and be able to see the world through their eyes, as much as I can, of course. It's like getting a role in the theater; you have to step into the character's shoes, feel what makes them who they are. Besides all the listed technical skills and applications mentioned in the job description, for which professionals like me already have a "trained eye," I want to understand the role of a specialist within a team, a company, a product, a culture. This is the more challenging part, but it's precisely why I take the time to see how a day in the life of... is going.
Today, I watched several clips, and even though this one was created by a specific company, I liked how the role of an #Infrastructure#Engineering#Manager was described. I'm sharing it, and I hope you'll comment on what else lies behind this role.
Behind every role, there's a superhero, and I'm always looking for them. In my eyes, the superhero doesn't wear a cape or have superpowers but is an ordinary, humble, and dedicated individual to their profession.

If you are interviewing an engineer with decades of experience, and the first technical question you ask is about how to filter an array or implement sort, you have already told that engineer about 80% of what they need to know about your team.

Today's senior engineer role is severely deflated. 📉
It's not technical skills, education, years of experience, or building high-quality solutions that define senior engineers. It is the ability to influence decisions and significantly improve a team's or organization's environment that defines them.
It's not only about how well senior engineers can do their own work. It's more about how they can help others do their work well.
It is a leadership role in the first place, the technical leadership one.
What the majority of senior engineering positions are today is perfectly suitable for a mid-level role—designing, building, delivering, and maintaining decent solutions. Let's be honest, many "seniors" with lots of years of experience haven't managed to reach even this level yet.
This distorts the role even further.

Especially in our SAP community the roles of Engineering Manager, Senior Engineering Manager, and particularly the Staff Engineer is rather difficult to grasp. If you are curious about these roles, then I highly suggest to read Alex Ewerlöf’s blog post.
And yes, I have seen the great stuff good staff engineers can do, it is a role many ERP implementations and transformations need. I consider it some sort of mix between Engineer, Architect. and Project Manager with focus on Dev, Ops, and whatever Xyz you might add to that. My elevator pitch usually goes something like this: ”A staff engineer is someone who solves complex engineering challenges and helps get them done”.
