When placed in a #gbv situation such as #rape, victims react differently. This can have an impact on their ability to speak out about what has happened to them. One of the #misconceptions about rape is that one needs to scream for it to be viewed as rape or violation. Society needs more policies and processes that do not focus on what the victim did and did not do during the violation. Just because one does not view it as #rape, it does not mean it did not happen. Authors such as Dooshima Dorothy Gbahabo and Sinegugu Evidence Duma in a 2022 article titled: "I did not scream. I could, I was terrified. I just followed them... I blocked my mind. Then they all raped me" discuss Tonic Immobility (TI). The authors refer to TI as "an uncontrollable autonomic mammalian response to an extremely fearful situation, is one of the most immediate consequences of rape, which is triggered when fighting the rapist does not appear conceivable and there are limited other means for self-protection". Educate yourself and others about the different reactions that people have in moments of violation.
