Good interview with Matt Calkins, CEO of Appian Corporation. I agree with Matt on three critical issues that will shape the future of AI, and influence the future of business and economy. 1) Despite the hype-storm to convince everyone otherwise, particularly stock traders and VCs, it's not just about money, or for that matter data scale. Microsoft is announcing multi-billion dollar deals related to AI every other day, but these are mostly political deals, often coordinated with the Biden admin (e.g., Biden is set to announce the Wisconsin data center deal today). It's mostly to boost stock value with the herd and gain political support in attempting to stall antitrust enforcement as long as possible. 2) AI is one of the purest forms of human intellectual pursuits -- ingenuity and wisdom will ultimately determine winners. Even those who have the talent on the payroll don't necessarily realize the best effort from that talent. Most scientists and engineers are ethical people, and when they see their employers exploiting them for purposes that are unethical and potentially catastrophic, they usually find ways to undermine those efforts. I think we are beginning to see that now in LLM efforts as people realize they've been duped. 3) As I've said for the duration, although we need to enforce antitrust, AI won't be a winner takes all outcome for several reasons. One is it's simply too large when applied across the economy. Governments and customers won't allow that to happen -- economy would collapse. Another is the ultimate winners must be trustworthy, and to be trustworthy they must protect customer data like we do in our KOS, not exploit it, as that data represents nearly everything of value in the digital economy, from organizational and digital sovereignty to human rights, assets of every kind, the knowledge economy, and employment -- essentially survival in the digital age. It is an extreme understatement, but to put it mildly, it's not a great idea to entrust your data with those who have proven willing to steal everyone's data, and/or attempt to transfer and monopolize the knowledge economy.

Big Tech is eating as much data as it can to win in AI — but it's not 'winner takes all,' CEO says
