Chile's #President Gabriel Boric inaugurated the largest mining investment in the last decade: Teck Resources Limited Quebrada Blanca II, an US$ 8 billion investment by #Canadian #Mining company Teck Resources Limited (jointly with #Sumitomo Metal mining and #ENAMI) The new QB incorporates leading #sustainability practices. It is the first mining operation in the #Tarapacá Region in Chile to use 100% #desalinated #seawater for all its production processes and an agreement is in place to #source #100% #renewable #power for the operation beginning in 2025.     It also incorporates a remote Integrated Operations Centre (IOC), located in Santiago, bringing together resources and data to help achieve better operational performance, improve integration and flexibility, and support a more #inclusive and #safe #work #environment. #Canada is the largest source of #foreign #direct #investment in Chile, with #diversified investment in more than 20 #sectors of the economy totaling US$ 36 billion by 2022, according to Central Bank's figures. Tie-ups between Western #graphite startups and Chinese #anode companies are accelerating, following the investment by a former senior executive of Chinese anode giant BTR into Canada’s SRG Mining. 💡 Carbon One New Energy Group, a company set up last year by Yue Min, a former BTR senior executive, will own 19.4% of SRG after the C$16.9 million ($12.7 million) deal is approved. CleanTech Lithium PLC (AIM:CTL, OTCQB:CTLHF) said it is open to inviting Chile's state mining company ENAMI Empresa Nacional de Minería to become a minority partner in its two projects in the country. #Atacama Salt Lakes and Laguna Negro Francisco, CleanTech's subsidiaries in Chile, have submitted applications for special operation contracts (CEOL) for the Laguna Verde and Francisco Basin projects. CleanTech added these are the first #CEOL applications to have been made in Chile since the announcement of the National Lithium Strategy in April 2023 and follow discussions with government representatives and other stakeholders. In the applications, CleanTech states that it is open to inviting ENAMI to become a partner in both projects on terms in line with other joint venture arrangements the state-owned entity has in the mining sector in Chile. Thrilled to share my recent interview with BNamericas, where I discussed the evolving legal landscape for lithium mining in Chile. While challenges exist, I remain optimistic. A new national policy aims to align the interests of the State, environmental agencies, and private companies through Public-Private Partnerships (often with the State as a minority shareholder and, in some cases, without its participation). These changes could unlock significant value in the lithium market. Moreover, there is a pending bill that seeks to make lithium a grantable substance, like other minerals. Regardless of the approach, it's crucial to unlock the billions of dollars in potential that lie within our salt flats, rocks, and clays as soon as possible.
