Saudia, has maintained a consistent position in the Middle East and Africa region and is now the Global Airline leader with an OTP of 88.22%. Thai AirAsia leads in the Asia Pacific region with an OTP of 85.19%. In Europe, Icelandair is the regional leader, achieving an OTP of 84.08%. Gol reigned in Latin America, earning an OTP of 90.53%. Melbourne Airport Airport has been picked by Turkish Airlines as their first Australia destination! Tickets are now on sale on Turkish Airlines Airlines website and the inaugural IST-MEL flight TK168 will depart IST on 15 March 2024 at 1730hrs and arrive at MEL on 16 March at 2040hrs. Both directions will involve a 1h 30mins layover in Singapore. Interestingly, tickets for single sectors such as SIN-MEL and MEL-SIN are also available for sale. This will mean capacity injection into the growing Singapore-Australia market which is much needed. Turkish Airlines will join five other airlines (Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Qantas, Jetstar & Emirates) operating SIN-MEL-SIN services which currently offers over 70 weekly services comprising of 21,000 seats. While this service is starting on a 3x weekly frequency, a daily frequency is surely on the horizon given the huge potential of connecting Australia to other markets beyond Istanbul. Sri Lanka sees a surge in air connectivity Part 2 Dr. de Silva also disclosed that over the next month, two airlines are scheduled to commence operations. “Maldives flag carrier, Maldivian Airline will begin services from Male to Colombo on 25 April, while Thailand’s national carrier, Thai Airways is set to resume operations from Bangkok to Colombo from 1 April. The increase in airline options is expected to further facilitate travel to and from Sri Lanka, catering to the growing demand from tourists,” he pointed out. During last year a total of 46,639 international aircraft movements were handled by the AASL, whilst 37,276 were handled in BIA, 548 in MRIA and 430 in JIA. In addition, in 2023 over 7.54 million passengers were handled and of that, over 6 million of them were handled at the BIA, whilst 125,623 at MRIA and 23,714 at JIA. During the first two months of 2024, the AAL handled over 1.5 million passengers and over 9,000 international aircraft movements. In January 2024, a total of 846,173 passengers and 4,733 international aircraft movements were handled, and the bulk of it was carried out at the BIA. Dr. de Silva said AASL is striving for operational excellence, aiming for a flight frequency between 4,500 and 5,000 flights per month to meet growing demands and ensure seamless connectivity. For March 2024, SriLankan Airlines has 874 scheduled arrival flights, Qatar Airways 150, IndiGo Airlines 118, Emirates 90, FlyDubai 90, Air India 74, Air Arabia 71, China Easter 61, AirAsia 47, Ethihad 41, Gulf Air, Jazeera, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Singapore Airlines, SpiceJet, Thai AirAsia and Vistara operate 30 flights per month. Air China has 18 flights operating per month, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, Air Astana, Rossiya Airlines and Turkish Airlines have 17 flights this month, Azur Air 16, Cathay Pacific 13, LOT Polish 9, Air Seychelles 7, Enter Air 6, Edelweiss Air 5, Arkia Israeli Airlines 4 and Batik Air 2 scheduled arrival flights will operate during March. BRUSSELS AIRLINES ENHANCES OPERATIONS TO CAPTURE AFRICAN MARKET GROWTH ➡ Lufthansa subsidiary Brussels Airlines is strengthening its focus on the African market. Starting in June, African traffic will be expanded in Brussels, and the hub in Zaventem will be developed into a connecting point for the Lufthansa Group and its partners from North America. ➡ Brussels will deploy all ten wide-body aircraft, enabling it to serve 18 African destinations, more than twice as many as all other Lufthansa Group airlines combined. This allows the airline to benefit from limited competition, as European budget carriers only fly as far as Morocco, and connecting flights via the Middle East (especially to West Africa) often take longer. ➡ According to an overview from the Swiss database ch-aviation specializing in the industry, Lufthansa transported just over 700,000 passengers to the African continent last year.
