When they hear the brand name ‘Instacart’, most consumers instantly think of a grocery home delivery service. A lot of grocery businesses have a negative perception of the brand, thinking of Instacart as a big corporation that is out to take their market share. As a recent Fast Company article highlights, however, Instacart has gone far beyond its original business model as a gig-based grocery delivery app. The California-based company recently expanded into the advertising sector and is developing in-store shopping technologies to make the bricks-and-mortar experience more seamless. Instacart aims to work with retailers to provide consumers with a truly omni-channel shopping experience, bridging the gap between online and in-store shopping. In 2021, Instacart acquired Caper AI, a tech company that produced smart shopping trolleys called Caper Carts. The carts, which are equipped with scanners, scales and a touchscreen, allow for customers to seamlessly checkout from their trolleys, without the need for completing the tedious manual checkout process. The following year, Instacart launched its Connected Stores offering, a suite of tech that aimed to help retailers make their stores smarter. Caper Carts are being rolled out in select grocery stores in the US.
