I’ve learned a lot attending yesterday the Community-led World Summit! It was packed with insights from high energy speakers who shared their views on what community means and can unlock for a business and Tech organisations. Looking at them from a product/ large Tech organisation lens, here are the main trends & ideas I’m taking away to apply in my current role: 🔹 Embracing a “Commarketing” view in your alignment strategy: Quoting Michelle Goodall’s concept, community management is its own discipline and isn’t to compete against the Product marketing team effort. To create alignment, your need to find the win-wins and Senior people buy-in. Therefore, as a community leader, for an effective integration of your products with the wider business, you need to balance many perspectives while being strategic championing diverse viewpoints.   🔹 Listen to Understand – and not to react: Nikki Thibodeau shared the importance of how you position yourself when engaging with your community. This resonated a lot with my coaching background tapping on active listening and radical responsibility. Community for product development done right pushes you to show up with courage and transparency as a leader. 🔹 Master Product partnership for Community-led Innovation: I really enjoyed hearing Ruthie Berber’s insights about how flexible and strategic you have to be when managing communities while including Product teams as essential partners. To deliver the best products and client satisfaction, Product Community leads have to master the balancing act of being the voice of multiple perspectives across the business. 🔹 Great discussions with fellow Product Community leads about the evolution of the discipline: Especially with Sagar Chandni about the traits for talents to thrive in community focus roles with the differences & similarities between startup vs Enterprise organisations. Overall, it’s interesting how much versatility is needed, so you adapt your communication & leadership style according to the needs of your community. It’s been amazing how people at the event have generously shared their insights! And the common theme from those take away? While Community is a lot of operations – with a LOT of platforms and shiny objects released with AI - it’s first and foremost a lot of mindset and stepping into strategically influencing the wider business, so you connect the dots between the organisation goals and the people. Happy lunchtime to everyone out there in LinkedIn land! We are one week away from #CloudCon 2024! I have several different things to highlight today besides the jersey reveal video below. First up, let's talk about the last track for Day One, Talking Identities and Password Management with Chip Bowden (Yes, he hasn't updated his profile in a while). Chip is Senior Security Engineer for Corewell Health and assists in running several different important solutions in the identity space. Abstract: Take a seat by the fire (more like 'in the frying pan') as Chip discusses Human and Nonhuman Identity Management, the struggle for perfection, and lessons learned. Takeaways: - The problem with identities and more cowbell - How we're sometimes just an example of what not to do - That we're still in book writing phase of the industry Next up we have the final track for Day Two. In this one, Robert Wagner will be talking to the Cybersecurity Poverty Line (e.g. good security on a budget). He has the luxury of hindsight as he is seeing small-to-medium sized businesses making the same mistakes that large companies did 20 years ago. He is hoping to help attendees make better choices when it comes to maximizing their limited budgets. I really think that ending the conference on this note will be great, as it aligns nicely to the overall conference theme about stress and burnout. FinCon tips for newbies! FinCon is fast approaching! This year it will be held in New Orleans starting on October 18th. I attended FinCon in 2021 and 2022 and these are the tips I wish someone had shared with me: (these tips can be applied to any large conventions) 🔸 Set up meetings in advance My first FinCon, I went in without doing much planning in advance. The second year I learned. I went on the FinCon app and posted I was interested in meetings with others for a skill swap. I shared that I was looking to meet with people who has knowledge on book publishing or public speaking, and in exchange I'd share my knowledge on influencer marketing and creating content on TikTok. I had about 12 meetings set up in advance which made my time at the convention very efficient, but didn't allow any room for organic connections. If I could re-do things, I'd probably only set up 5 meetings max. 🔸 Bring snacks The best part of FinCon is getting to connect with other passionate and likeminded money nerds. Sometimes this will run into your lunch time. And food may not be readily available at the convention center. Instead of ending the conversation early, bring some snacks, like a granola bar or some beef jerky to hold you over until your meeting is done. 🔸 Stay at the hotel at the convention site This one I learned the hard way. My first year, I rented an Airbnb near the convention center, but it was a 10 minute drive away. Once I left, it was hard to pull myself together and go back. That was missed networking time. The second time, I stayed on site and had a much better experience. I could go up to my room to decompress for a little bit, and walk back down to the convention ready and recharged. It's more costly, but in my opinion a worthwhile expense to do the convention "right". If the rooms are sold out, look on the FinCon app to see if anybody needs any last minute roommate arrangements. I'm very bummed to be missing FinCon this year as I'll be away in Spain sipping on sangria and nibbling on tapas on an overdue honeymoon 🍮🍹 #covidbride. Big shoutout to these two amazing humans, Larry Roberts & Vinnie Potestivo 🎉 Our paths crossed at Podfest Multimedia Expo 2024, and what began as a casual chat quickly spiraled into an unforgettable escapade (including a daring escape from a sinking submarine, with seconds to spare)! After four intense days of emceeing, the temptation to call it a night was strong. But my inner voice urged me to "go where the action is" (cue the bar scene). And I'm glad I did! Larry and Vinnie sparked up a conversation, and before I knew it, we were enjoying dinner followed by a spontaneous trip to Escape Room Orlando. Talk about making memories! You never know who you'll meet or where those connections will take you. But when you embrace new experiences, dive into exciting situations, and say yes to spontaneity, that's when the real magic happens. Larry and Vinnie quickly evolved from acquaintances to friends. We're already deep in brainstorming sessions, sharing our challenges, and lifting each other up. It's incredible how fast bonds form when you take the time to connect on a deeper level (seriously, surface-level conversations? Not our style). These guys aren't just amazing friends; they're also incredibly generous and supportive souls, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone. So here's to embracing the unexpected, pushing beyond comfort zones, and making new connections!
