Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the Survivors of residential schools and mourn the children who never came home. We stand in solidarity with the Survivors, families and communities impacted by residential schools. The legacy of residential schools and colonization is ongoing. It is important that we recognize the impacts and intergenerational trauma of residential schools and take action for reconciliation today and throughout the year. Gun Violence Reduction | Emmy Award Winning MC | Director of One Lexington at Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG)
I told myself coming into this year that I would stop giving life to negativity, even with a lesson attached. So….. Let’s just say 2021 and 2022 were challenging years. Which is what made yesterday a benchmark day in my life thus far. Yesterday we got to stand with our amazing community partners and talk about what's being done and what we hope to do in the future. Nationally the United States saw a 13 percent decrease in homicides, while Lexington saw a 46 percent decrease in murders in 2023. Last year Lexington had under 100 nonfatal shootings (87) for the first time since 2017. In 2021, Lexington had 24 gun-related homicides with victims under the age of 30. In 2023 we saw that number drop to 11. While intervention and the city’s crisis response are an integral part of addressing community violence, we understand that we must transition from a continuum of “care” model, to a continuum of opportunity. Eliminating generational disparities and barriers is the only way to make our community more equitable, prosperous, and safe for ALL residents. We have to treat gun violence as a public health crisis and get to the root causes of this illness that is plaguing too many of our neighborhoods. In our research, Chapin Hall found that African American youth in the United State have an 83% greater risk of reporting homelessness than other racial groups. Whether they live in cities, suburbs or rural areas, Black youth are disproportionately affected by housing instability. This November, during #YouthHomelessnessAwarenessMonth, let’s commit to centering Black youth in creating new programs, services, and strategies for preventing and addressing housing instability. Let’s move upstream of this problem by supporting youth and their families at times of trauma that can lead to housing instability. And let’s support evidence-based coordinated homeless prevention models like adaptations of the Australian Geelong Project, which provides for universal screening in schools followed by tailored case management and support. Let’s commit to being there for Black youth today, so that they, and their enormous potential, can be there, whole and healthy, for all of us in the future.

This morning, I had the pleasure of joining Lindsey Boyer, South Valley Services' executive director, on ABC 4's Good Things Utah to discuss Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We talked about the importance of recognizing green flags and red flags in relationships. Remember, abuse is about power and control while healthy relationships are based on equality, respect, and mutual decision making. Let's continue to spread awareness and work towards ending domestic violence. #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth https://lnkd.in/gHZh9pqR

We are heartened to hear the new Government's commitment to halve Violence Against and Women and Girls in the King's Speech yesterday. Our CEO Cherryl Henry-Leach responds to Labour's statement with a call for a whole system approach to effectively create positive change, including: - A clear delivery plan that keeps the safety of victims and survivors central to its development. - Investment in the sector so that vital support provided by specialist organisations is sustained. - Access to Justice will not re-traumatise victim-survivors and they experience trauma-informed support at every stage from disclosure - Improvements to the NHS include a Coordinated Community Response to health and domestic abuse. - Expectation that all education settings respond appropriately to domestic abuse and actively promote and teach healthy relationships. - Reduce homelessness, recognising domestic abuse as a lead cause, whilst protecting survivors and guaranteeing victims' rights. MBHC believes that by building stronger connections and coordination of care, we can positively improve the trajectory, not only for the individual but also for our community, justice systems, and Missouri as a whole! Specifically, our Missouri Crisis Intervention (CIT) Team, Community Behavioral Health Liaison (CBHL), and Emergency Room Enhancement (ERE) programs work with local stakeholders to build stronger partnerships. MBHC is continually working to improve, advance, and grow our programs. Emergency Room Enhancement (ERE) programs, also known as emergency room diversion programs, are designed to reduce barriers that prevent individuals from seeking care in the most appropriate setting. The primary objective of these programs is to reduce the use of emergency departments and hospitalizations while decreasing rates of homelessness, unemployment, and arrests/law enforcement involvement by engaging individuals in treatment and utilizing community supports.
