Venture Fellow at VC Lab | Apprentice at the Founder Institute | Startups & Ethical Venture Investing | Former Chief of Staff and Investment Banking Associate
🌟 Reflecting on an incredible journey at VC Lab! 🌟 For the past two months, I have had the opportunity to be in the third cohort of Venture Institute, an exceptional program offered by VC Lab. With only one week left, I feel compelled to share my experience and the impact this program has had on me. Venture Institute is a competitive training program designed for aspiring venture capitalists and has provided me with invaluable insights into venture capital that would otherwise have been hard to reach. Each week, through demanding assignments, we delved into topics such as venture structures, fund economics, limited partners, venture deals, venture operations, and venture accounting. We explored intricate concepts like the Power Law, return waterfalls, fund modeling, Limited Partner agreements, Cap Tables, sourcing, venture firm entities, developing our venture style and what not! The program also encouraged us to explore our local ecosystems, allowing us to gain a comprehensive understanding and practical understanding of how venture capital affects our surroundings! Beyond the rigorous training, one of the most rewarding aspects of the program has been the connections we made. I've had the pleasure of meeting and learning from incredible individuals from around the globe, from those just starting their careers to industry leaders, all united by a shared goal: to master the game of venture capital. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the VC Lab team, including Adeo Ressi, Myrto Lalacos, and Emily Adams, among others. Your efforts in organising webinars, designing tasks, and fostering a supportive community have made this journey unforgettable. I would also like to thank all the guest lecturers, including Mike S., Genevieve LeMarchal, Taylor Davidson, Brian Bell, Marko Hara, Neal Strickberger, Hans Kim and Rob Del Prete. As industry experts, your insights were truly eye-opening and provided a realistic perspective on how a venture capital fund actually works. To anyone looking to break into the venture capital, I highly recommend considering the Venture Institute. VC lab offers two additional programs, one for emerging fund managers and the other for LPs. CEO Connect East - Sweden's largest angel investors network | Regional Director Nordics for Founder Institute, Startup Grind, Founders Live | Founder Nutty Ventures | Serial Impact Entrepreneur
It brings to mind the term “Missionaries over Mercenaries” which for both VCs & startup founders become even more relevant these days. Only those who have the fire in the stomach and sparkle in the eyes will still be in the business 5 years from now. You gotta love the business. So for any new and old VCs out there, buckle up. It’s gonna get worse before it gets better. So just focus on staying in the game, the next big cycle is just starting - Marvin Liao

While Venture Capital firms openly discuss their portfolio companies and the value they add, little is publicly known about their fundraising strategies. That’s why I found this Signature Block article so insightful. It offers tips, tactics, and advice from 17 General Partners at venture capital firms and insights from Limited Partners on what they look for in fund managers. This article has helped me build on the past month of learnings from my participation in Venture Institute from VC Lab. I hope you enjoy this post as much as I did, no matter where you fall in the venture capital ecosystem.
