Nice article from McKinsey & Company about the key qualities of CEO’s that drive PE portfolio performance including talent management, focus on performance metrics, strategic leadership and ability to quickly make decisions to drive performance within PE hold periods. I find that CEO’s with restructuring backgrounds have the ability to analyze situations and make fast decisions. I also see digital transformation as a critical element to value enhancement, which adds considerable complexity to the EBITDA maximization plan and often is a major blind spot for many leadership teams.
Global CHRO with P&L leadership experience. Public Company, Private Equity, M&A and transformation leadership.
In a 2022 survey 94 percent of PE general partners said they believe PE portfolio company leadership contributed an average of 53 percent toward investment returns. 👋 Caught a Harvard Business Review IdeaCast episode and had to share! Curt Nickisch and Ted Bililies discussed a big shift in private equity: it's all about investing in people now. ➡ Loved this point: “Leadership is a collective sport.” It's all about team growth. This is where we at Pinsight excel – empowering leaders and teams through succession planning and talent development. ❓ In line with this thought, how do you see the role of leadership evolving in today's business environment, especially concerning team growth and development? Are you observing similar shifts in how companies invest in their people? Eager to read your thoughts and experiences in the comments! 6 Leadership Failure Points of #PrivateEquity Investments that slow or minimize value creation and extend hold times. Failure Point 1. Leaders fail to assume an ownership mentality, fail to adopt a bias for action and fail to change the legacy decision-making, cadence, accountability and behaviors to match the needs and timeline of the exit strategy. Failure Point 2. Leaders fail to anticipate business or market movements and act reactively or with tunnel vision. Failure Point 3. Leaders fail to identify needed changes and/or fail to make the hard, upfront decisions about how and what to realign and lack the organizational reallocation agility to adjust as assumptions (inevitably) change. Failure Point 4. Leaders lack a shared conviction around the investment thesis and / or understanding of how the individual parts impact value creation. Failure Point 5. Lack of coordination of day-to-day decisions and operations around the investment thesis leads to conflicting viewpoints, misaligned workflows, low engagement and too many priorities. Failure Point 6. Stakeholder misalignment between the PE deal team, operating partners, CEO and leadership team causes lack of focus and ultimately the thesis to go off-track. The take ahome: #CFOs (especially) and #portfolio leaders often need to radically adjust their mindset, tools and strategies to succeed. Sometimes the lift is too great, which is why PE often changes out leadership.
