2 Billion. That's how many people on this planet lack access to safe water. At PepsiCo, we believe there is a vital role for the private sector to play in collaboration with public sector and non-profit partners by bringing our performance, our scale, and our people to solve global challenges at the local level. And that's what this six-part documentary series is about- the inspiring work community leaders around the world are undertaking to address the global water crisis. These stories reveal the underlying factors of inequitable access to safe water as well as the heroic actions taken by everyday people to provide meaningful solutions. People being the change they want to see in the world. But that's only part of the story- often times companies will spend more money documenting their philanthropic efforts than on the philanthropy itself. But not at PepsiCo. Here, an incredibly small but talented team located all across the globe put their passion into their purpose, delivering high quality work at a fraction of the cost so the money can stay focused where it belongs- on the impact itself, not the victory lap. At the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), the Hoare family uses a philanthropic profiling tool called Care4Most (www.care4most.org) to establish which causes mean the most to family members. Recently, the GBT’s focus on environmental projects intensified, with the funding target rising from 11% in 2018 to 20% in 2022. To maximise its impact, the GBT partnered with Impatience Earth to develop an 'ecosystem granting' strategy. This approach uses multiple smaller grants to address the interconnected nature of environmental issues, supporting solutions from the planting and preservation of seagrass to regenerative agriculture. April is the month to celebrate our planet and take action to protect it. However, I fully recognize that getting to care for and talk about environmental sustainability issues is a privilege for those who have economic sustainability. Knowing this privilege, FRG uses its resources and power in the community to carry out initiatives like donating meals to those in need to combat food insecurity, partnering with local organizations like BREADCOIN, partnering with DC public schools to host culinary interns to further their careers in a discipline they love, and more. A conversation regarding the nature and issues inherent to modern governance will surely find find its way to the specter of “corporate capture”, and rightly so. As corporations and the ultra-rich leverage their astronomical resources to exert a disproportionately high influence on social and political institutions, communities and individuals rely on the protection and diligence of those willing to stand in the gap. Nonprofits, such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), often adopt that responsibility. So what happens when those actors fall prey to capture themselves? Logan Campbell narrows that question’s scope to the MSC, asking, “Why has the world’s preeminent ecolabeling nonprofit gone against the advocacy of leading human rights and environmental groups?” He argues, “Because the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is designed to protect fisheries, not people or fish. I had the privilege of volunteering at the CleanUp initiative at Olugbede Market, Egbeda. 🧹🗑 ### 🎯 Why Olugbede Market? Olugbede Market is a bustling hub that serves as the backbone of the local community. However, like many busy markets, it faces challenges with waste management. The CleanUp initiative aimed to tackle this issue head-on. 🌱 ### ⏳ A Year Ago Today Armed with gloves, trash bags, and a strong sense of purpose, we set out to clean the market. The experience was eye-opening. We collected several bags of waste, but more importantly, we started conversations about sustainability and responsible waste disposal. 🌍 ### 🤝 Community Engagement What made this initiative truly special was the community involvement. Market vendors and local residents joined us in our efforts, turning the CleanUp into a community event. The day served as a reminder that when we come together, we can achieve great things. 💪 ### 🙏 Gratitude and Reflection I want to take a moment to thank everyone who was a part of this initiative. Your dedication has not only cleaned a market but also planted the seeds for a cleaner future. 🌳 ### 📣 The Journey Continues While we've made progress, there's still much work to be done.
