As DAF providers consider what DAF grant requests to reject, getting the Board aligned will matter. Donors Trust, National Christian Foundation. Signatary. Catholic Foundations. Baptist Foundations. Jewish Foundations. Islamic Foundations. Community Foundations. Women’s Foundations. LGBTQ+ Foundations. National Gift Funds. Will advisors have to research which DAF provider will reject as hateful which grants to orgs of interest to a particular donor? I think so, and it can be an uncomfortable conversation. Does Planned Parenthood cause harm? Which providers take that position? Is Focus on the Family a hate group? Which providers take that position? Is Daughters of the Confederacy a hate group? Is Steven Miller’s America First Legal a hate group? What about Pacific Legal Foundation? Is Koch funded Stand Together a front for political organizing in service to extractive capitalism? I feel remiss as a philanthropy educator in having ducked such questions. Values based planning is a cultural war zone. And advisors are entering a minefield without preparation.

I'd like to recommend, once again, to mid-size nonprofit leaders in San Diego to consider working with SVP on their strategic plan. There was no cost to work with them, just our commitment to prioritize this work. It took a lot of my time, but I saw the SVP volunteers put in as much time as I did and I wasn't going to let them down. I did not realize what a unique opportunity it would be to work with corporate leaders experienced in strategic planning. Their way of thinking about growth was very different than mine. As a nonprofit leader, I'm reminded almost on a daily basis that we have limited resources and capacity. It's hard to think about growth when you are focused on your current limitations. The new strategic plan doubles our budget in the next five years. We have a road plan with 14 goals, 23 initiatives all with metrics, and a budget. We plan to present this to our community partners and ask them to also stretch as they invest in our impactful organization. We'll see how it goes. I'll keep you posted. Why strategic planning? A few days ago I saw a post about how org leaders should be the quarterback of their fundraising efforts. As a former HS Football player in Texas, let me tell you that idea is misguided. Instead, I'll offer one of my favorite sports analogies: Leaders, be the Point Guard of your Development team. A good PG is a facilitator, the pacesetter. They can score, but primarily they set others up to put up points. They can bring the ball up, or they can fall back when a teammate takes the lead. They are often the embodiment of the team's values. Find a Jordan to lead your fundraising, and then let them cook. Be a Magic, a Kerr, a Staley, a Dame. Then go celebrate your wins. #communitycentricfundraising #fundraising

It was an honor to serve RaiseUp Families as their Executive Director for nearly 4 years. In that time, the organization experienced unprecedented growth: ✅ Expanded Board of Directors by 50% ✅ Doubled the number of families (clients) being served ✅ Client outcomes improved by 100% (average income increase in signature 9-month HandUp program went from 35% - 71%) ✅ Client graduation rate improved from 80% to 91% ✅ Revenue growth from $450,000 to $1,000,015 (donations from private sources) These outcomes are a result of the Board of Directors and staff working together towards a common goal, each person utilizing their unique skills and abilities in their individual role to help the bus arrive at its desired destination. They are the result of hours and hours of innovation, hard work, and determination.
