46% of cybersecurity leaders consider deepfakes a 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻, alongside phishing and malware development. Deepfakes have been around for a while, but they’re not just for pranks anymore. The scale of deepfake scams is difficult to estimate (for now) due to underreporting and misattribution, but the image below hints at its recent exponential growth. ✅ The good news: Deepfake detection solutions are quickly emerging as a response: - Google DeepMind’s SynthID - Intel Corporation’s FakeCatcher - Reality Defender - Sensity ❌ The bad news: Defenses against adversarial capabilities in enterprises may be cumbersome: - Insufficient employee awareness and training - Lack of suspicious request verification through multiple channels - Lack of next-generation multi-factor authentication - Lack of secure processes for sensitive operations like large money transfers. ✉️ Get in touch with us if you or someone you know are working on defending reality. #cybersecurity #saas #ai #deepfakes #defendandprotect Evolution Equity Partners - Multistage venture capital firm investing in market-leading cybersecurity companies.

❗ The governing trends in cybersecurity ❗ with Amol K. Chief Product Officer at CrowdStrike ➡️ There are 700k job vacancies in cybersecurity and demand is only rising. ➡️ Advanced attacks have been democratized; it’s not just nation states like it was 10 years ago. ➡️ Breakout time (attacks making progress from land to expand) has dropped consistently for years. ➡️ CISOs are increasingly focused on tool consolidation and cost-cutting. ➡️ Alert fatigue continues to be a major problem. ❗Availability of human time is constrained, but the volume & sophistication of attacks continues to go up. This necessitates a new paradigm. ❗ 💡 But why hasn't automation really worked in cybersecurity so far? SOAR never met its promise. 💡 What products have launched in the last year that show promise? 💡What are the opportunities for new vendors in the face of consolidation? UK’s NCSC assess the impact of AI on ransomware… in short… - More volume and heightened impact - Evolve and enhance existing tactics - Everyone trying AI out - Capability uplift in reconnaissance and social engineering - making it more effective, efficient and harder to detect - More sophisticates uses will be limited to threat groups with resources and access to training data and unlikely before 2025 - Will support rapid analysis of exfiltrated data and use to train models - Lowers bar for novice criminals All of which seems a sensible set of judgements. I fully expect national states are exploring the value of AI in depth - and this will create new malware and attack patterns. The adoption by criminal gangs worries me - I can see a crime as a service model evolving with expert groups offering AI enabled attack and social engineering services sooner than later. It’s a market economy and I suspect it can innovate quite quickly. Mass use of AI for attack purposes reminds me of the effect virus creation kits and polymorphic malware had a long time ago in the virus scene. It forced shift to heuristic detection away from simple signature detection - at the time a big move. Unfortunately I suspect AI has the potential to create an even bigger shift over the next 3-4 years. All of this means we are in for a scale up in attacks, greater speed of evolution of the threat… and who knows the spectre of battling AIs as our AI enabled defences (increasingly operating at the community level enabled by active defence via government and big tech) battle AI enabled attacks. Welcome to 2024! #cyber #cybersecurity

There also are the consequences of increased technology use when governance is not in place to manage the risks: errors/misinformation/bias, security/data vulnerabilities and lack of human reasoning. For example, these may translate into qualification tools that exclude parts of the potential customer community and cause reputational damage, exposure of trade secrets through misuse of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and complaints from customers about engagement that lacks the human touch. People risk actions mean creating a culture that is committed to protecting the organization from cyber threats, data breaches and intellectual property theft, as well as one that genuinely addresses AI and other disruptive technologies as both opportunity and threat. By driving a whole-workforce commitment to cybersecurity, organizations will be better placed to see and capitalize on the opportunities offered by technological change and disruption. #riskculturelab #riskculture https://lnkd.in/g6YKWjYJ
