This is great Jen. I think I read elsewhere a similar thought of yours on this! When startups jump straight to capturing revenue without groundwork, they often miss key market signals and fail to resonate with their audience. Step 1 ensures you have a tailored, validated value proposition, making your sales efforts in Step 2 more effective and sustainable. In essence, you earn the right to 'sell' by proving you understand and can meet your customers' needs.

Step 1 is part art part science.. it's like dark.magic ( ie pre selling ).. whereas step 2 is more formulaic

I’ve seen many cases where startups inadvertently achieve step1 by attempting step2. Harder, costly, less ideal but works occasionally
