As a #nursingstudent in Hawai’i, I remember a nurse reaching out to me about an elderly patient who immigrated from Korea who wasn’t able to communicate fluently in English. I also remember a patient from the Marshall Islands, who was receiving care in Hawai’i. In the first instance, I was able to communicate to her in Korean, which is my first language. She asked for a moisturizer that was in her purse to be applied on her face. Sometimes, it’s the “small” things that matter to our patients, along with the excellent nursing care we provide. In the second example, all I knew were handful of words in Marshallese, which I learned from one of my best friends growing up on the islands. I greeted the patient in Marshallese as I learned more about him in our conversation, and his face lit up instantly with a huge smile on his face. Those small gestures opened up our nurse-patient relationship as I spoke their “heart” language. #BIPOC nurses may “have broader and deeper insights into patient beliefs, attitudes, ethnicities and perceptions. When patients see nurses and other members of the medical team who look like them, it can remove barriers, open up conversations and ultimately improve access to quality care." #DEI in nursing is critical to patient outcomes, and it is also critical to the success of nursing students and our profession. #nurses #nursesonlinkedin #nursingeducation #diversity #inclusion #equity #belonging #deib

It only took me four years of coursework followed by a summer dedicated to the attached. But here it is: my Masters of Nursing capstone project, advocating for increased utilization of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in family practice in Alberta. TLDR: NP led clinics should be utilized in Alberta like they are in ON, BC, and the US. More appropriate compensation models are needed in Alberta to compensate for value added to family practices by NPs.

Nursing at a Crossroads: Is Outdated Education Driving Nurses Away? Nursing is trapped by tradition. The public and nursing administrators themselves are overlooking the enormous skills potential of this workforce to advance healthcare in Canada. If there were more accredited programs for advanced nursing specialties, would you consider transitioning to private or a speciality area of practice? What areas interest you the most? https://lnkd.in/gjRxki8N

I love this video about compassion! I pose a few questions to healthcare leadership! Do you have compassion toward your nurses? Do you support them? I would like feedback! Let's have a real conversation, not a witty post denoting our brilliance and importance. How do you support your nursing staff? How do you show them you value the work they dofor you and the communities we serve?
