I got a job at Facebook, Dropbox and a local movie theater using the same strategy. I networked. With the movie theatre, I applied in person and met with the key decision maker. I was offered the job shortly after. With Facebook, I emailed people who worked at the company and connected with people on LinkedIn. I kept applying and eventually landed a job offer. I'm not alone. Your friends and competition are networking to land more interviews, jobs and increase their salaries. You can do the same thing. I recommend: -Networking with people who are relevant to your job search. So if you're applying to data scientist roles, network with people in data science. -Don't get discouraged if someone doesn't respond. Professionals are very busy and often get hundreds of messages. Follow up and try messaging different people at each company. If done properly, networking can change your life. (Follow for more networking and career advice)

💼 Only 10% of recruiters and employers have responded to applications and they are taking an average of 8 days to do so. In my latest review of my job search data dashboard, I'm attempting to take an unfortunately timed lay off and make lemonade by doing what I do best... analyze the data and figure out where I can improve. I've also found that: - For me, I’m finding the best postings from LinkedIn Jobs, and - Either my application timing is off, or recruiters are inundated with applications that they aren’t able to provide substantial rejection rationale. My initial findings from my job search are not extremely encouraging, but I've set pretty low expectations given the time of year. What do you think I should analyze next? If you don’t have atleast one recruiter reach out to you every week on LinkedIn despite having an All-STAR profile, you are making this common mistake. Just like the clients who come to me, you have done all the work that LinkedIn gurus tell you to do: - You have updated your profile picture - Added a keyword-rich Summary - Gotten the recommendations - Modified your headline - Started posting But you are still not hearing from any recruiters or headhunters. Absolute crickets in your DMs. You want to know why? Because you have the wrong keywords in your LinkedIn profile. The number one way recruiters find candidates on LinkedIn is by Boolean search. If they need a Data Scientist with 5 years of experience in eCommerce, guess what they will search: Data Scientist + 5 years of experience + eCommerce So, if all you talk about is your experience with building Financial products, chances are you will not show up in search results. For one of my clients, before we updated her profile, she was showing up in search results for “Engineer” and “PhD”. She is neither a PhD nor is looking for Engineer jobs. But she did work with Engineers and PhDs before in her role as a Data Scientist. We updated her LinkedIn profile to incorporate the right keywords she wants to be found for. Within a week, she started showing up for search results for Data Scientist and Sr. Data Scientist roles. LinkedIn is the most powerful tool for job seekers. 95% of Data Scientists will be looking for roles passively. I've had a lot of great conversations with Data Scientists lately and generally, they've told me that they're: 👀 Keeping an eye on the market 👀 Noting any particularly interesting roles 👀 Occasionally scrolling through LinkedIn job boards. Most of them are content in their current roles and have told me that they'll only consider leaving once they feel like they've maxed out their potential and achieved everything they set out to when they joined the company. But the reality is that there just aren't that many roles on the market for mid to high level data scientists. If you are advertising, it's important to outline exactly why your company is a good fit for them rather than staying in the comfort and security of their current role. If I were to rewrite my resume today, I would think like a marketer. Here's the generic summary I've seen all too often on resumes: "Results-driven leader with a strong track record in [industry/sector], known for strategic planning, team development, and achieving organizational success. Proven ability to drive results in dynamic environments through innovative thinking and effective execution. Seeking leadership opportunities in a forward-thinking organization." If this is your summary, what does it really say about YOU? Not a whole lot. Your resume is a landing page of sorts. The introductory paragraph should entice the recruiter to READ further down the page. Think like a "marketer" and create a compelling story. Here's my summary. It details my work experience and growth mindset in two sentences: "8 years of recruiting experience across Engineering, Product, Design, Marketing, Sales, G&A, and Senior Leadership within streaming media, gaming, and health tech. An avid student of recruiting and tech, with courses completed in Product Management, UX / UI & Design Thinking, Tech Recruitment, Tableau, and Looker Data Studio." It's landed me interviews for most roles I've applied to without needing an internal referral. Need help? Drop your summary in the comments, and I'll reply with a rewritten blurb.

I'm curious what you all have to say on this one: is the era of the software generalist over? I ask because many job postings are now very specific, even at the manager level. For someone like me (who has spent decades getting good at everything from systems administration to embedded C and data science), it's surprisingly difficult to find a job listing where I'm a great fit. When I do get to interviewing, I always make it to the final round, which goes great, and then get a pass. This is a meaningful change from the past, when a final interview that went well inevitably resulted in an offer. It's kind of a bummer if our industry has "matured" enough to require this sort of specialization. Early in my career, I saw what happened to the specialists: their one favored environment became obsolete, the work dried up, and they struggled to get up to speed on the new stacks. To avoid that, I've stuck with evergreen tech and skills (unix and data science), and made sure that I'm aware of the newer technologies. I actively start using them once it becomes clear which are going to stick around and which are "stack of the month" on hackernews. And yet I'm still looking for a new job. I guess, if you are looking for a generalist manager, I'd love to hear from you. Or if you might know someone who is, feel free to point them my way. I'd appreciate it.
