Virtual Wards! It's just the beginning, not the end of the story. There's been a lot of media on a recently published paper in BMJ that has found Virtual wards clinically effective but not cost-effective. First, we have to commend the clinicians for designing and doing this study to the best of their ability. We need more such studies. We spend billions on health tech but shy away from systematically evaluating their benefits. Maybe because we are scared. But like all healthcare cost studies, there are many gaps in this study too. So we must follow up on this without bias and pursue improvements. Like all new technology and processes, we can't just assume it will become cost-efficient with increasing volumes or usage, for along with high volumes in healthcare the key element of patient safety starts popping up. In summary a great start, but hopefully not the first nail in the coffin for virtual wards. Thoughts???
