[Why did we launch at the specialty coffee expo?] Exactly one year ago, we had an incredible opportunity to introduce Imunika LLC at the Specialty Coffee Association Expo in Portland, the largest coffee trade show in North America. Many asked why we wouldn’t debut at the other functional food expos. They had a valid point, since Imunika had more functional benefits than any other mushroom coffees in the market. In fact, comparing our 4-week microbial fermentation process to the simple dried mushroom powder blends would be like comparing a Tesla to a bicycle. Not a fair game. But, +25,000 specialty coffee experts and industry professionals at the expo presented an ideal environment to gain the most honest and, therefore, the most critical feedback. We visioned Imunika as a truly market-disruptive product. And, it felt like a pre-requisite to test ourselves against the toughest crowds if our goal is to become the world’s 1st functional specialty coffee. Like Sinatra said, “If I can make it there, I’m gonna make it anywhere.” For the first time as a functional coffee brand, we even booked a separate cupping session at the expo. All participants could taste two samples (pre-fermented beans vs post-fermented beans) prepared per SCA cupping guidelines to see how our process actually enhanced the flavor profile. Thankfully, the result was quite positive. Those who tasted were genuinely impressed by our smooth, chocolate flavor without a bitter aftertaste. Some even came back on the next day just to have an extra sip. Most importantly, we could fine-tune ourselves as a product from the inputs received during this soft-launching. I still remember the visitors who simply enjoyed trying something new in coffee. With such a genuine support, we will continue our journey to deliver you the ideal first cup of coffee, because we believe you are what you sip. #sca #specialtycoffeeexpo #scaexpo #coffee #mushroomcoffee #imunika #functionalspecialtycoffee #youarewhatyousip

In a number of posts we’ve talked about the importance of language and the challenges brands can face when the language of the product is not understood. Hard Seltzers, and their limited success in the UK are a perfect example of this. Within the RTD category people have endless choices. Cocktails. Mocktails. Gin in a tin… Flavours ranging from mango and passionfruit to damson and ginger. They’re fun, light hearted, often sweet. They’re easy to understand. A flavour (often fruit) plus a spirit. But what’s a hard seltzer? For the UK market the name has no meaning. No context. What’s a seltzer? And a hard one at that? It doesn’t sound fun or exciting like a passion fruit martini. Trying to educate people with a new name is challenging. Especially in a crowded market, where time and consideration are limited. A product needs to be quickly and easily understood. What other products have struggled to be understood? Challenge assumptions. Talk to Hummingbird Insights. #marketresearch #consumerbehavior #foodandbeverage #innovation
