Gem of the day on a cookie banner which reinforces my point that the majority of companies (data controllers) don't know what data they are processing and why, yet tell you they "take privacy seriously blah blah blah". Quote "SID is a necessary cookie: This is a very common cookie name but where it is found as a session cookie it is likely to be used as for session state management." They don't know as otherwise, they wouldn't use "it is likely to be used". This controller clearly relied on OneTrust to scan the site, but forgot to understand why their platform needs it so badly that is "necessary", yet don't know precisely why. Data protection supervisory authorities don't seem to be enforcing cookie infringements. If they started, they would find many clues as to the lack of Technical and Organisational measures. #gdpr #privacy #eprivacy #dataprotection #si336

A website is a bit like some cats (certainly my cat): Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde. The cat is adorable with you and is a fighter once passed the house walls. In the same way, a website may look safe when you surf: a cookie banner saying that the privacy of visitors is respected while at the same time, behind the scene, visitors data is passed to dozens of third parties. The website may also have security issues that puts the whole company at risk. Online therapy company BetterHelp Online has been ordered by the U.S Federal Trade Commission to pay $7.8 million in settlement after allegedly misusing the personal data of its users. Last year the company was investigated and found to be sharing data with social media giants like Meta and Snap Inc. for advertising purposes. The volume of data subject requests (DSRs) and processing costs continue to rise. DataGrail's report provides a 246% increase in requests from 2021 to 2023. For example, privacy requests are booming yearly, with businesses facing an average of 859 DSRs per one million identities in 2023 compared to 377 in 2021. Signal Plus Messenger, an imposter to the original version of the private communications app Signal, is created for surveillance.   Around 1 TB of data obtained from a ransomware attack on Prospect Medical Holdings was found for sale on the dark web.
