Why the Dallas Cowboys are flawed.
What can we learn from their failures? ⬇️⬇️⬇️
I find the failures of The Dallas Cowboys absolutely fascinating.
The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise IN THE WORLD.
Forbes values them at $9 billion dollars.
This is more than the New York Yankees, Golden State Warriors, Real Madrid, Manchester United, LA Lakers, and New England Patriots.
However, unlike these teams above…
They don’t win.
WHAT?! How can this be?
How can the most valuable sports franchise in the WORLD not be good at delivering results?
That’s like Apple sending you a phone that can’t text. Or Amazon getting your delivery to you in 2 weeks.
It makes no damn sense.
Let’s break it down from a business perspective:
1️⃣Lack of a Clear Vision
Vision is simply this: Values, Purpose, and where the heck we are going.
What is the values, purpose, and goals of the Dallas Cowboys?
Is the purpose to make tons of money or to win championships?
I found their mision on Top Work Places (nothing in their website)
“To be the premier sports and entertainment franchise in the world, driven by the intense commitment to win on and off the field.”
Notice the words. What comes first? Being the most popular franchise or winning?
Telling right?
I found their 5 pillars: Look at #1 & #5
1. Buisness: “we understand that this is a business. We are here to drive revenue, lower costs, and be the best, most profitable franchise in the world.”
5. Competition. “We are driven by the intense commitment to win, both on and off the field.”
Again, notice which is #1. Which is #5.
In 2009, the Cowboys spent $1.5 billion on a stadium for their players to play. In 2016 the Cowboys spent $1.5 billion on a headquarters for them to practice.
So, as they continued to lose, their digs got nicer.
🤷♂️
What are we prioritizing?
2️⃣ Zero Accountability.
The Owner, CEO, And General Manager of the Cowboys is the same person.
Jerry Jones.
The owner can do what they want. It’s their team right? The CEO usually drives the business side of things. But the GM, well, the GMs #1 goal is to win.
There are only three teams in the NFL who have failed to play in a Championship Game in the last 28 years.
The Detroit Lions, Washington Commanders, and yes, The Dallas Cowboys.
# of general managers in the last 28 years:
Commanders = 8 Lions = 6 Cowboys = 1
Inattention to results? Lack of accountability?
How can you fail to deliver results but still keep your job?
When accountability is lacking at the very top, it flows down into the rest of the org.
3️⃣ Only One Voice
We know that successful orgs have tons of voices and input from all over.
The “genius with a thousand helpers” mentality doesn’t work.
Its a team. We all speak up. We argue. We debate.
Ideas and opinions from everywhere!
When there’s only one voice, we fail to arrive at the best answers and we all lose.
Just like the Dallas Cowboys.
