A thought-provoking big-picture challenges article on software engineering for safety critical systems by Nancy Leveson and John Thomas. The short version: we need more actual safety engineering of software, not just hardware-centric safety engineering + writing some code. Recommends: - More emphasis on up-front development effort - New approaches to system safety requirement identification - Better methods to design safety/security up front - Better software design approaches for handling complexity - Better integration of human factors considerations - Better hazards analysis methods - Better interdisciplinary engineering aproachs - Better change management - New certification approaches Article is pay-walled but any ACM member should be able to access. https://lnkd.in/gcC-uivw

We took part in a conference last week... One of the moderators asked a group of engineers the following question: "You say you don't get enough time to do meaningful stuff next to day-to-day activities, but did you ever ask your manager?" The engineers thought it was a great question. We believe it is not. Asking that question is trying to blame the behaviour of people. To make lasting changes as a company, we believe you should fix the environment and the systems in which people work. "How we would phrase it: How can we update the current system so that this problem gets tackled now and in the future?" Jan Van Lishout. #fixsystems

I help people in Systems & Requirements succeed at their jobs quickly. To explore if or how I can help your engineering project or career with my courses or trainings, grab a spot on my Calendly below.
As systems engineers, we have to get good at managing conflict. Here is a video with some tips on how. I was on a project, that was incredibly fun - but one senior person was NOT on board with the systems process. We lost years, not firing him early on. For an exclusive compilation video (over an hour) of systems engineering tips - many not shared publicly, but only in my courses - opt in here: https://lnkd.in/ghZQKXug #systemsengineering #conflictmanagement #conflictresolution
