New Cinder blog post! Brian F. has a new post up on the Cinder blog, based on his keynote at the Terrorism and Social Media conference last week. It discusses the history of extremism online, the impact of AI on Trust & Safety and the how inconsistent enforcement of regulations is impacting digital media companies. Check it out! "We are better off today than in the past. The work done by a whole host of people to understand terrorism online is so much more sophisticated and rigorous than our work back in the mid-2000s. We’ve come a long way in 20 years. Nonetheless, one of the things we got right at West Point 20 years ago was to embrace the dynamism of what we were studying. We were deeply opposed to the idea that anyone could be an “expert” on terrorist use of the internet. This was a multifaceted concept: on the one hand, we had the idea that the groups we studied, the geopolitical context in which they operated, and the technologies they used were changing so quickly that “expertise” on the phenomenon was impossible. Even recognizing the knowledge collected in this room, I still like this idea. It fosters humility and audacity, both qualities necessary to counter the adversarial and adaptive people, organizations, and ideologies we are here to discuss." https://lnkd.in/gQ923PuQ

Worse, despite abundant examples of authoritarian aggression and worldwide terror attacks, nearly 1 in 5 Americans seem to be confused about where the real threats to their liberty are actually emanating from. According to the UT Austin study, a growing number of Americans thought that the intelligence community represented a threat to civil liberties: 17 percent in 2022, up from 12 percent in 2021. A nontrivial percentage of Americans feel that the intelligence community is an insidious threat instead of a valuable protector in a dangerous world—a perspective that jeopardizes the security and prosperity of the United States and its allies. https://lnkd.in/eczjjW-U

The Cambridge Disinformation Summit has been thought provoking on many levels. I’ve learned a lot from international researchers over the past two days. I continue to be interested in investigating the social or psychological traits of troops that increase their vulnerability to information warfare exploitation. What weaknesses and fears exist? What causes psychological vulnerabilities? Malevolent actors may be able to influence decision-making processes by exploiting these vulnerabilities. So far, I have heard some speakers mention these vulnerabilities to manipulation techniques: anger, fear, lack of education, emotions, polarization, past traumas, abuse, pain, distrust in organizations, beliefs/values, the need for community, paranoia, preexisting conspiracy theories, suspicions, and prejudices. Thanks to the DISARM Foundation, I have a framework to work from. Time to red-team! #disinformation #propaganda #informationwarfare #newsliteracy #influence #vulnerability #military #trolls #bots #trust #transparency #exploitation #disarm #misinformation #informationoperations

DARE TO THINK, DARE TO ACT (敢想敢干) According to interviews with the FBI, from a #counterintelligence perspective, this is the most aggressive period they have ever seen of Chinese activity. One official stated, “The system is blinking red right now.” There is almost every day a front-page story about Chinese activity in and around the U.S. homeland. But most of these stories are very compartmentalised and focus on only a piece of a broader issue. Some of these stories are about #cybersec, some of them are about #espionage, and some are about Chinese police stations in cities like New York. "We felt it was important to pull all of those different threads together into one study, and to examine the breadth of Chinese action." https://lnkd.in/gAbB7nrW #dod #nationalsecurity #chinatech #nationaldefense #gangofFour

A year after the Wagner Group’s mutiny in 2023, have we learned how to counter such groups? Our latest Working Paper by Matthew Lauder looks at the rise and fall of the group – arguably Russia’s most powerful, successful, and valuable foreign policy tool of the contemporary era. Over the course of its history, the Wagner Group grew from a small band of war fighters into a vast and evolving network of organizations, conducting political, economic, and military operations around the globe. To counter the Wagner Group and similar organizations, it is essential to conceptualize and deal with them as non-hierarchical, decentralized, and dynamic organized crime or terrorist networks. This requires simultaneous and synchronized targeting at all levels of the organization. Read the whole analysis and a full list of recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/dSevKc83

Here are the questions that everyone should ask themselves: From which year to which year Palestine belonged to Palestinians? (the answer has to be in years) Do Hamas leaders want to kill all Jews and destroy Israel? (your answer should rely on their own words and not your interpretations) Why in 2005 Israel completely and unilaterally left Gaza, not leaving in Gaza not a single Israeli, neither civilian nor soldier? If Palestinians existed before the 60-ies, why didn't they create a Palestinian state from 1948 to 1967 when West Bank and Jerusalem belonged to Jordan and Gaza belonged to Egypt? #middleeast #education #strategy #future #sustainability

Some key takeaways from my latest research that impact across a large number of sectors that are adopting AI systems: 1. LLMs are designed with safety features for content moderation and bias reduction. 2. They excel in common scenarios but have limitations in understanding specialized, nuanced topics. 3. Critical sectors require insights into high-impact, low-probability events, which LLMs may not fully address. 4. There is a trade-off in LLMs between general reliability and handling specialized edge cases. 5. Enhancing LLM capabilities to recognize and address specialized needs is crucial, without compromising safety and ethics. #LLMSafety #AIethics #MachineLearning #DataBias #EdgeCaseAnalysis #ArtificialIntelligence #TechInnovation #DigitalResponsibility #CounterTerrorismTech #MedicalAI #InformationSystems #AIandSociety #TechGuardrails #HighImpactAI #FutureOfAI
