Day 2 at NRF 2024: Retail's Big Show Asia Pacific. So, Day 2 keynotes were about transforming the retail experience. Here's a quick recap: The first keynote was a conversation with Laurent Boidevezi, the Moët Hennessy APAC President. Laurent emphasized that Moët Hennessy is not just about selling bottles; it's about offering experiences. Through modern store designs, creative packaging, and lifestyle products, they're "Crafting experiences" that go beyond the product. 🥂 Next, a fireside chat between Nicole Sheffield, Wesfarmers OneDigital MD, and Paul Zahra. Nicole shared about OnePass, a loyalty program aimed at providing members with extra benefits and convenience across the group's retail businesses. However, I can't help but wonder about the "Why" behind this, especially with the existing Flybuys program. As a regular customer, I haven't yet felt the value OnePass promises. 🤔 The highlight of the morning was the fascinating story of Jim Thompson. Frank Cancelloni, Group CEO, shared their journey of transformation post-pandemic. From redefining their product line to transitioning from elephant shirts to modern assortments. Jim Thompson is evolving into a lifestyle brand. It was fascinating for me to see Wholesale and Retail companies in the Middle East facing the same challenges I faced as a retailer in LaTam. It confirms how uniquely emerging markets wholesale companies operate and the urgent need to adopt technology in the Middle East, LaTam, Africa, and Asia. REVITALIZATINON OF RETAIL ASSETS - WHEN A CHALLENGE BECOMES A MUTUAL OPPORTUNITY #retail has proven to be a stable asset despite all challenges we've seen the last years. This last week has seen a real mix of news stories across retail, picking up very much from where we left 2023. Here are a few of the pieces that stood out for me. Top of the agenda were the reports that Superdry, John Lewis and THG were all likely to be making redundancies across their workforces. Again highlighting the razor-edged operational margins retailers are working on in the current market, I expect that with more 2023 Q4 results to be assessed there will unfortunately be more similar announcements in the coming weeks. Some retailers appear to be bucking this trend though, with LVMH continuing their strong performance throughout the end of 2023. The luxury goods group showing that even in difficult times, with savvy market positioning there are still opportunities for retailers to succeed. Whilst most retailers won't have the luxury (pardon the pun) of the resources that LVMH have in their toolkit, targeting core audiences effectively and encouraging creative operational improvements can bare fruit even in these economic conditions. January footfall figures demonstrate one of these opportunities - that despite less-than-desirable weather (to say the least!) coupled with travel disruption, footfall figures were broadly in line with averages seen over the last 15 years. The requirement therefore for retailers to be nimble and react to their customer demands, providing quality service and focusing on converting those shoppers into customers is more important than ever.
