A few observations coming back from heart surgery. Health is a gift. I always took for granted that I could work long hours and fly around the world and be a hands-on parent. Right now I can't fly, can't pick up my 4-year-old or drive my 14-year-old to volleyball, and have to take a nap if I work too much. And I couldn't be more grateful that I'm breathing and walking and hugging my kids (ok, just the little one). The US healthcare system is kind of amazing. I know that we like to talk about how expensive it is vs other countries, but I went to four surgeons to find the right one, had one of the best doctors in the world do the surgery, and spent 9 days in the hospital. Insurance covered all of it, no questions asked. Thank you Aetna, a CVS Health Company (and Scope3 for having great healthcare!) Having a purpose helps. Before I went into surgery, I posted a video on LinkedIn stating publicly that I was going to recover from in time to keynote the Green Media Summit next week. Sitting in the hospital room with tubes and wires sticking out of me, feeling lethargic, I would think about that post, make it to my feet, and drag myself up to do the walking that the doctors said would speed up the recovery. Community is everything. I had no idea how many people cared about me until I posted that video. Hundreds of emails, DMs, comments, texts. It was overwhelming and wonderful, and in those dark moments in the hospital I could palpably feel the love and support. I hear a lot of negative talk about social media, but I don't think we give enough credit to all the positive things that we get from a global, virtual community like LinkedIn. Thank you to everyone who supported me through this process, and excited to be back in public - a little worse for wear - next week!

Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Invariably when one’s health is tested we get a crash course in gratefulness and appreciation for all we have. Your openness to share such a personal struggle will 100% lead many in your LinkedIn family to “take stock.” Real courage and act of caring Brian O'Kelley. Props to Scope3 for doing right by their staff on the healthcare front as well.

Brian O'Kelley - thank goodness you've had the care and support needed to get through this. I had a chronic illness diagnosed at 22 years of age. I made it my business to keep the existence of it to myself and just power on straight through it. Then when people find out what you've been dealing with the real meaning of humanity comes into focus. I was humbled and pleasantly shocked at how much support exists. Congratulations and keep on reaching....

So very glad you are doing well and on the mend, Brian! Lot of rest and recuperation to you, sending you and your family support and positive energy!

Loved how you related fixing your heart to driving sustainability. thanks so much for sharing!

Glad to have you back Brian, wish you speedy recovery and sending positive vibes, thanks for sharing. It made me think, both physical and mental health is such a fundamental metric for achieving performance at work place, so why can't we make this as part of org initiatives and maybe OKR's? Tricky part but I will try and experiment it with my brilliant team this year.
