Dear Games Industry, do we actually understand what our business is? I don't think we do. Elden Ring maker Fromsoftware understands. We are selling downloads. We used to sell cartridges, then CDs, Then BluRays, and now (near as makes no difference) downloads. That is the product. The game is the value we add. The more value we add, the more customers we can get. This is why great games sell so well. They are a more valuable download, especially when compared to poor games in the market that are often being offered at the same price.

Normally, we often see players churn from games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto to play new games before returning to their tentpole franchise of choice. Many players also tend to come from hits released around the same time (in this case, like Helldivers 2 and Palworld). However, The Outlast Trials’ player acquisition data tells a more nuanced story. While Palworld was the top adventure game by player acquisition to The Outlast Trials (29.6%), the other two highest-ranking adventure games fall under the horror theme. #outlasttrial #RedBarrels

Elden Ring DLC release has brought back players almost to launch period activity levels. The max concurrent player numbers peaked at 900k+ during launch, settled at c. 50-100k and are now back at c. 800k. This puts Elden Ring as the second most played game on Steam right now. We don't have data on DLC attach rates, but the indication is that they're fantastic. We're also seeing new players entering the game as a result (and purchasing at full price given that Elden Ring does not do any promos at the moment.
