Over the years, I have had a number of people with P-OCD reach out to work with me because I have expertise in and a deeper understanding of pedophilic disorder. Many well-intentioned therapists (who may have an understanding of treating OCD) seem to struggle with P-OCD, simply because they tend to approach this issue with the same misinformation and stigmatized beliefs that surround pedophilic disorder. In order to help support treaters who may find themselves working with a client struggling with P-OCD and/or folx navigating this extremely distressing subtype of OCD, I have created a pretty straightforward chart of the *basics* around the differential diagnosis (see below). Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy? YES! A 2020 study, “Psychotherapy at a Distance,” found that online video therapy, primarily for cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), has been as effective as in-person therapy. The study found that “remote therapy grants the therapist revealing glimpses of a patient’s home and life.” Interactions with children, pets, roommates and spouses that can be heard or witnessed while the individual is in their own personal space will be more genuine glimpses into that person’s world.
