William James described the intention to remember a forgotten word as the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) state. TOT is a complex representational state that takes up limited capacity, that guides word-search and evaluates candidate words, but does NOT have experienced qualities like color, warmth, flavor, pitch, or a clearly bounded locus in time and spaces.
