Here’s some interesting data: Over the past few months we have reached out to contacts on LinkedIn and other platforms to understand more about top of mind work related tasks. Here’s the most popular results from each poll: 50% of respondents to choose “outdated workplace design” to our poll to understand the biggest impact on their work. While we didn’t dig into any detail on this survey, it hardly comes as a surprise when you take a look at our next result…. 48% or respondents are still working in traditionally design offices (for example, cubicles and individual offices), yet we know that face to face collaboration and socializing with co-workers are the top reasons for coming to an office – yet the traditional office design fails, as it only really supports focus work. With average occupancy still hovering at less than 50% or pre-pandemic levels, which in reality means offices are on average 32% occupied you can understand why 70% of facilities and workplace managers are eager to understand occupancy and space usage data. That might also explain why in another poll 43% of FM, Workplace and CRE Leaders are focused on right-sizing real estate this year (in other words downsizing) and 36% focused on optimizing occupancy. Oh, and when they’re thinking about moving to that new location, 44% want restaurants, bars and cafes, closely followed by 33% wanting to be close to a transport hub; not so keen on gyms/parks and shopping though! And here’s the largest stat of all; despite wide recognition that managing a dispersed and hybrid workforce requires new skills, 75% of companies have yet to implement any kind of assessment and upskilling program! If any of these feel familiar to you, whether that be right sizing your real estate, creating an incredible workplace for your employees or helping to formalize new ways of working and upskilling managers, we’re here to help. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝? The design of the physical workspace plays a pivotal role in fostering employee relationships, sense of community, and innovation. For this reason, even though I’ve been a hybrid worker for a dozen years, my experience in designing and delivering such spaces coupled with my many years in hybrid work long before covid, leave me convinced that the need for a workplace, perhaps redefined in some other way than "workplace" is still crucial for most professions. In addition, the purpose of a workplace that demonstrates the values of company mission, values, branding and community can invigorate the work culture, creativity and knowledge sharing. This includes designing communal areas like lounges, cafes, and multipurpose spaces that encourage informal interactions. Additionally, the aesthetic and environmental quality of these spaces can significantly impact employee engagement and belonging, which I believe are crucial for performance and innovation. So even though the work-from-anywhere and hybrid options help a variety of people who for various reasons in their lives could not spend as much time in an office, and even though shared workspaces may help companies with flexibility, the workplace as a pivotal place for most companies will be around for a long time to come. #WorkplaceDesign #HybridWorkplace #CollaborativeSpaces #Innovation #EmployeeEngagement #Workplace #Flexibility

A significant shift toward prioritizing well-being in the workplace brought an emotive aspect to the forefront of workplace design, placing greater emphasis on creating a sensory experience that fosters emotional well-being. With such a heavy focus on well-being in the workplace, more empathetic design principles, biophilia, and resimercial design have been introduced to provide warmth, comfort and connection to nature in turn, nurturing employees and creating a positive workplace experience.
