Books I'm currently reading and taking inspiration from: - Mona Chollet's "In Defence of Witches" (for the feminism) - Daryl Fielding's "The Brand Book" (for the BTS of strategy at Lenovo and Dove) - Evante Daniels' "Power, Beats, and Rhymes" (for the searing cultural commentary and melodic prose) - Alistair Campbell's "But What Can I Do?" (for an antidote to political apathy) Yes, I am actually reading all of them. Yes, it probably would be more efficient if I picked on and stuck with it. No, that's not how my brain works. I'm constantly pulling ideas from all the books I'm reading, and all the podcasts I'm listening to. I take thoughts and concepts from different niches and schools of thought, using them to illuminate my own writing, and to unpick messaging problems for my clients. That's how I keep from getting stuck in jargon, or using the same phrases everyone else in a niche is using. Because my brain is constantly connecting threads from all over the place - like one of those murder boards covered in red string. So, hit me up - what should I read next?

Not all books are created equal. Some are written for information. Some are written for entertainment. Some ought not to have been written in the first place. Yet, there are many books that have commonly been deemed "great." Many of these are novels, myths, and fairy tales of sorts. Many are philosophical treatises. Some are a combination of both. In a new episode of the Christ & Classics Podcast we raise and attempt to answer the question "What is a Great Book?" We discuss three governing criteria, which harken back to Episode 1. A "Great Book" will 1. raise deep anthropological and moral questions; 2. arrest the attention with aesthetic beauty; 3. have had significant influence on later generations, which is an inevitable corollary of the first two criteria. What happens when you feel like you're not learning or growing enough? I often feel like that and I have to remember, as author Austin Kleon says, that "your job is to collect good ideas" while avoiding the infinite garbage that exists out there now. This means proactively and deliberately improving the quality of your 'inputs'. For me it means: - Grounding myself in curiosity in my conversations - Reading something thought-provoking - Listening to a good audiobook or podcast For you, it might mean you need to: - Capture the ideas that resonate with you - Figure out which ones are worthwhile - Break them down into digestible, less intimidating insights Doing any of these (or many of them) makes the journey to wisdom a series of 'aha' moments, instead of a giant epiphany.
