🏝️ After a nice holiday, I’m officially in my first week of being unemployed! 🗣️ So how can you help/What does Adam do? I’m a communications and marketing guy - that’s probably a lot of agency buzzwords for “PR, Digital Marketing, and Social Media”. 🥇I’m exceptional at storytelling, communications, and getting hype around brands (be it through partnerships, PR, or marketing). I’m also an elite networker and overall strategist. 📈Industries I am great at: CPG, Sports Media, Tech, and Gaming. Worked for some big brands in those spaces too! 💻 I’m currently open to FT, contract and consulting work in areas that support public relations, partner development, digital and content strategy. 🪩Things to listen for that I apply to and would love recos: Director/VP of Communications, Public Relations, Partnerships, Integrated Marketing ❌ Things I’m not looking for: I’m not a growth marketer. This post is going to be a bit more personal than usual, so bear with me. I’m struggling. That is the absolute best way to sum up this up. I got let go from my job due to budget cuts and then my transmission went out in my car. I have applied to more jobs than I can even count, I either don’t hear back and get ghosted, or make it through several interviews and even conduct projects to just have them go with someone else. I’ve sent out hundreds of applications in the last 4 months. I know it’s the nature of the market right now, but it sucks and I’ll go as far as to say it even hurts. I’ve had countless nights where my mental health wasn’t the friendliest person in the room to me and it lead me to extremely dark places. I’ve held off for so long on making this post and not seeming pitiful, but here I am. I read a significant number of responses in this thread. I also read a description you wrote about what you do. Here it is… “I journey map the customers jounrey and provide insight on how to improve this journey, that could be improving copy to better speak to the customer, providing easier pathways to reach the end goal, I do email marketing, and dive into the mind of my audience to better help them on what they are struggling with. I’m very good with people. And psychology.” What the heck does that mean? In my professional experience, that job description is psychological bullshit. It makes no sense. I ran this by two others that I know, before I posted this, that have tremendous work ethic and they agreed. And it boggled my mind that a lot of people in the over 800 responses sympathized and/or identified with the original post. I know extreme circumstances happen. I’ve seen it. But in the majority of cases I’ve seen, if you were very good at your job, you don’t get laid off or the employer helped you get on another project or another company. Your reputation precedes you. If it’s a bad reputation, you’ll end up on LinkedIn posting a sad sack story that no one will hire you. If you have a great work reputation, you’re probably not one of the over 800 respondents. Am I being harsh? Absolutely! Wake up! Be humble! You do have to work hard to achieve your goals. No one owes you a damn thing. Change your life to position yourself for a first step. Take that step. Once you’re successful at that first new step, take the next step. And continue to work hard to be successful at that and the next step and the next step. I wish you all well.

Welp, the cat is fully out of the bag, as helpfully demonstrated here by my assistant, Sunday. (Thank you, Sunday. You can go back to your regularly scheduled destroying all my earthly possessions.) I'm leaving my full-time job at Roku. A good job. A great job, even. Voluntarily. With nothing else lined up. ...In probably the worst job market since the Great Recession. This will definitely be an inflection point in my career—whether for better or worse, it's too soon to say. I won't lie, I spend 40-60% of my day panicking, wondering wtf I've done. You see, I suffer from a rare and serious disease where I can ONLY imagine the worst-case scenario. I will be minding my own business when I get violently smacked with flashes of myself, penniless, sleeping under an overpass, swaddled in CVS receipts for warmth. But I'm trying something a little bit different. I'm trying to approach this time of uncertainty with curiosity. I'm trying to ask, "What if I end up somewhere better than I ever could have imagined?" I believe in my talent. I believe in my work ethic. And I believe in my network (seriously, you guys are the bees knees 🥹). So who's to say all this WON'T work out for the better? And if it doesn't, I can always move back home, get a job at the ski resort shuttling children onto lifts for $12 an hour, subsisting on lodge fries and drip coffee. Which honestly doesn't sound *terrible*. Please keep your ear to the ground for Senior Copywriter-or-adjacent roles for me! I am DISGUSTINGLY open and DISTURBINGLY hireable for full-time or contract roles.

Marketing is Brand is Culture is People is Comms...This exactly why I'm standing in the intersection I'm in. Marketing was cool but I only liked the storytelling parts, the community parts, the organic -- not ads, not automations, not moneymoneymoney. I cared about the human part. So, I expanded from marketing into brand in 2018, which was cool. I started getting closer to the core of the humanity inside a business. Built brands for years (while still doing content marketing stuff). This all eclipsed into COMMUNICATIONS when I expanded into workplace culture, internal comms, employer brand, jobseeker/candidate comms, etc. And since my original degrees are in education and linguistics, I rope in a ton of writing and word work, I do trainings and workshops, etc. My point is, all of this is adjacent. If you have marketing skills and you're especially excited about the story, community, or creative aspects -- comms is good. But, likewise, if you're into human resources and people ops but you want to move beyond governance and into culture -- choose comms! When I started Mindful Dynamic Consulting, though, we didn't want to call ourselves a Communications consultancy. We call ourselves a humanization consultancy. I've been posting open jobs every week for 6 months now, and BY FAR I see communications jobs more than anything (social media runner up). Maybe it's just what gets sent my way, i don't know, but it's staggering how many more comms jobs I see than anything else. If you are in marketing and looking to get into another discipline, or are wondering what people are hiring for right now, far and away, its communications jobs.

I would do anything to be back on the radio; having the fun I used to have will always welcome that opportunity. But the skills I picked up over a decade in the radio industry are 100% transferable. Communication Skills: Radio has given me excellent verbal communication abilities and the ability to convey information effectively to diverse audiences. Public Speaking: Because of my previous career, I am used to speaking in front of large audiences; I have the confidence and the ability to engage listeners. Writing and Editing Skills: I often wrote scripts, prepared news segments, and edited audio content, which developed strong writing and editing capabilities. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: I was broadcasting the moment it was announced that the Queen had died, and thanks to my quick thinking and the ability to respond to unexpected situations, I dealt with this effectively. Time Management: In radio, I dealt with tight deadlines (pop songs are short nowadays), managing time effectively, and prioritizing tasks to ensure smooth program delivery. Teamwork and Collaboration: I always worked closely with everyone in a radio building, from news to sales. That required effective collaboration, cooperation, and coordination to produce high-quality content. Audience Engagement and Interaction: In my radio work, I always encouraged interaction with audiences through phone calls, social media, and live events, so I understand how to engage with audiences through these platforms. Adaptability and Flexibility: Radio was constantly changing, requiring adaptability, flexibility, and the ability to adjust to evolving circumstances. Networking Skills: Radio allowed me to network with industry professionals, guests, and listeners, giving me valuable networking skills.
