One question I often hear from founders is, “What type of marketer should be the first marketing hire?”
I’ve been on both sides of the hiring process as a candidate and leader.
There are always signals as to what type of marketer you need to hire first, such as growth rate, funding, product-market-fit indicators, business gaps, and sales process complexity.
Without a doubt, the first marketing hire needs to have a strong product marketing background.
I’ll fully admit that my foundation is demand gen. But, I often think back to how product marketing would have unlocked so many business gaps.
✅ Product marketing gets you closer to market problems.
✅ Product marketing helps you understand real customer pain points.
✅ Product marketing articulates the strategic narrative.
✅ Product marketing helps differentiate against competitors.
✅ Product marketing provides a focus for your sales and marketing efforts.
✅ Product marketing enables the sales team to sell more effectively.
✅ Product marketing helps you launch new products with a bang.
Determine your distribution strategy, positioning, and ideal customer profile, and so forth. All of this builds then builds the foundation for growth.
Only after you’ve laid the foundation, hire a growth-oriented role.
🤔 What type of marketer do YOU think makes the best first hire?
