Is the Swatch X Blancpain collaboration a strategic decision or a mismatched partnership? Following the launch of Swatch Group’s partnership with Blancpain for the Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Collection,  MARKETING-INTERACTIVE asked Mark Teal, Chief Marketing Officer VCCP Singapore, whether the time was right for the collaboration. Mark noted that collaborations can be a tool to help grow a brand’s appeal by reaching out to new audiences: “If that’s the strategy, then it’s important for companies to invest in understanding how they can connect to a new group of people and how it still relates back to their brand values and business goals”. He added that a good partnership strategy is when the collaboration gives both companies an opportunity to learn new techniques and innovations by working together. TAG Heuer has seen multiple changes of its strategy during the last decade and not always for the good. It seems that Frédéric Arnault - the brand's CEO - has decided to bring TAG Heuer back to its fundamentals which are two horological icons, the Monaco and the Carrera. My article published on revolutionwatch.com analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the brand before the new CEO takes over. It is rumoured that Julien Tornare - the actual CEO of ZENITH Watches - will replace Frédéric Arnault in due course and that gives us the opportunity to do a case study of a brand with two faces. TAG Heuer has lost market shares in recent years to some direct competitors such as Tudor, Omega and foremost Breitling pushing very hard in this market segment. The Morgan Stanley x LuxeConsult annual report on the watch market estimated that TAG's retail market has been halved from 2017 to 2022, whilst Breitling took the opposite trajectory by tripling its share.
