On October 27th, Altai Ventures' very own Melissa Beight hosted the second annual WIN: Women in Innovation Awards Gala. Melissa co-founded WIN Awards last year with Lindsay Liu to champion and recognize women leaders, rising stars, and champions in innovation and female-founded startups across industries.
At Altai Ventures, we are always striving for greatness, and Melissa is no exception. At the gala, she received The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her commitment to volunteer service.
Other highlights from the program included WIN: Women in Innovation's first demo day, where itselectric founder Tiya Gordon received a non-equity check and a fireside chat between Melissa Beight and Jenny Sui, Principal at Craft Ventures. We also got to spend time with Altai’s first fellow, Memi Kirikoglu. It was truly a special evening!

Female power and innovation - EXIST Women Pitch Day 2024! 🚀
Oh, gosh, what a powerful energy at yesterday's event! Together with amazing and inspiring women, such as Oleksandra Ambach from Berliner Sparkasse, Mali M Baum CEO of WLOUNGE and MAGDA GROUP, Lina Schüre from Business Angel Club Berlin Brandenburg e.V., and Katrin Jahnke from Startup Incubator Berlin, I had the honor of being a part of the jury for EXIST - Existenzgründungen aus der Wissenschaft Women 2024. Witnessing over 70 women applying for the new program, Exist Women, and listening to 20 finalists pitch their ideas was truly inspiring. #nonsibiventures is launching our Monthly Insights series where we will share interesting and relevant data, news and charts with our community. Here’s non sibi Insight #1:
Value Gap - Underrepresented Minority (URM) and women founders from top-funded startups receive less funding through each stage of growth and particularly at exit.
The pressing question is, how do we break down barriers to drive more equitable funding - the key to driving innovation and unlocking 30% higher returns for investors upon exit per Kauffman Fellows. One year ago I was on my way out of Zalando. The big difference back then was that on the other side, I had no clear roads, paths, or plans. Just my willingness to change.
I remember my head and heart full of emotions, expectations, and fears that accompanied me before, during, and after this movement.
Still, I wanted to live and try so many things.
And I did it! 💥
One year later, today, I feel encouraged to share more about the past months of my life and all the events that turned my career upside down. 🤸♀️
It started out with my solo trip to Brazil. Full immersion. Three months. Revamping my rusty Portuguese, stepping out of my comfort zone, and exploring the beauty of this country for a longer period. Some call it a sabbatical. To me, it was just the right kind of experience to set the tone for the year ahead. 🌝
When I came back, I got to face all that blur of thoughts, doubts, and fears once again. My solution was to follow my intuition. That's when I joined the UX UI design bootcamp at SPICED Academy. Back to the "student life" for a while was fun and rewarding. I met incredible people, learned new skills and built my first-ever digital product. 🎨
The product I designed focused on an issue close to my heart: women's safety. It's a problem that we, as women, face far too often, and I’m working on a platform to alleviate this concern. 👭
As time went by, the idea matured and I continued to invest in it with the amazing support and mentorship of Alevtina Evgrafova, PhD, ACC ICF. Until recently, when I decided to take my product to the next level. 👯♀️
I applied for the Startup Incubator Berlin program, where out of 20 women with amazing ideas, only 10 were chosen to turn their visions into reality. And I am the happiest being one of them. 😍
This means a new chapter is about to begin. ✨
Now, I'm a bundle of nerves, excitement, and curiosity once again. 🦋
Twelve months ago if someone had told me that in a year's time I'd be starting an entrepreneurial journey, I would have laughed out loud.
Yet, here I am :) eagerly looking forward to what 2024 has in store. 😉
