We are people who do things. Stay with me here… This amazing building in the centre of #Accrington is destined to be a new heritage centre. Currently in the development phase, thanks to National Lottery Heritage Funding, we are exploring what this building could become, steered by the local community. Inclusion, access & participation at the heart. What I love about this project is how heritage isn’t something to be defined, people determine what their hertiage is (The National Lottery Heritage Fund ‘s own words!) The sentiment of the Oscar Wilde quote keeps coming up in various ways throughout our engagement/consultation work. People are asking for inspiration & examples of great things that have been crafted from their hometown, wondering what they can ‘be’... but they are also asking to have a go, to try new things & learn new skills that connect them to the past. They want to not just visit a new place for one thing or one activity, they want a place that changes with the seasons, offers opportunities they haven’t heard of before & a place they can also just exist and feel part of. ‘If you can’t see it, you can’t be it’ The more conversations we have, the more privileged I feel to be the person curating all the feelings and thoughts together. What started as friends having fun in the ocean with a video camera, has led Dennis Fay of Salty Monkeys to not only creating a product line and an artist incubator, but also a dedicated community on a mission to clean the place they call home.     “I'm born and raised up in the Torres Straits. So, the ocean was a critical part of growing up- it provided work, adventures and a lot of the time it provided food.    “We say we care about the ocean and it's a critical part of our life. So, we want to make sure we practise what we preach, and we now have programs where we get out there into the Torres Strait with our marine debris task force.”    Collaboration and working together is key to the success of Salty Monkeys, who also work with a range of local Indigenous artists on bringing their product lines to life.     “Together is everything we do. So, whether it's the goods we collaborate on with artists to bring a product to the market, and it’s also our beach clean ups - it's about bringing community together to be able to do what we do"    Running a business such as Salty Monkeys is an opportunity for Dennis to also help his community prosper.    “Primarily, a lot of the employment opportunities in Torres Strait are government based. We're providing new jobs which helps empower community and gives greater opportunities to more people.     “We want to demonstrate that we too can create wealth and incomes from our own way of living without relying on that government sort of structure as well.    “Our vision is to be able to have our products with our artists together to be global products.” Learn more about Salty Monkeys here: https://lnkd.in/gVifZkGN #indigenousbusinessmonth
