Understand the guidelines and policies Most aspects of healthcare are covered by clinical guidelines and policies, which outline: which treatments are most likely to work for you how your healthcare professionals should interact with you in general the quality of service they should provide. Examples of these documents include: National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, which outline evidence-based treatment options for different conditions. (Find out more on the NICE website.) Confidentiality and data protection policies, which outline your rights regarding any personal information your doctor holds about you, and what they must do to keep it private. Codes of practice for people who are members of professional bodies, for example doctors, nurses and accredited counsellors. Complaints procedures. These should be accessible and easy to find using a web search, but you can also ask your doctor or healthcare provider to show them to you. Find an advocate An advocate is an independent person who is there to represent your opinion and help make your voice heard. This can be extremely helpful if you are finding it hard to let healthcare professionals know what you want, or you're facing barriers to getting support. An advocate can: come with you to appointments help you ask questions and assert your wishes support you if you want to make a complaint or appeal any decisions. A friend, family member or carer might be willing to act as your advocate informally. Or you could consider professional advocacy services. It was a great time trimming out the datacom rack live at the Vertical Cable booth during ISC West! Times like last week at ISC are outstanding reminders of how much more powerful and productive we are as an industry when we work together instead of against each other. Did I have to spend my time at ISC building out a rack and showing other integrators how they can do better? No - I could have walked the show floor as usual and seen a lot of cool stuff. Did I want to share knowledge and skills with other integrators? Heck yeah! Gate keeping “trade secrets” is ultimately nonproductive. Sharing knowledge and skills benefits everybody and moves the industry forward so that we all win! In true #communityovercompetition fashion, having the opportunity to meet so many fellow systems integrators and industry peers and share some tips and tricks on how they can take their installs to the next level is always a great experience. From quickly terminating keystone jacks, to labeling, to methods of perfectly dressing out patch panels, there was a LOT of productive conversation last week. For me, seeing people leave the booth with new knowledge that will change their game in a positive way is a win for the industry! Huge shoutout to VC for being such an integral partner in our day-to-day as a systems integrator and the industry as a whole. Teaching the Policing Events course really opens ones eyes on how easily these types of incidents can develope, and sometimes how easy it is to spot the issue well in advance if someone has that eye on safety. The work of Prof. Dr. G. Keith Still strikes me as simultaneously wonderous and facepalmingly simple everytime I teach it. The realisation on my students faces as I go through it is a joy everytime. Yet every course I have new examples to talk through.

The week that was and boy what a week! 3 weeks in and I’m starting to settle nicely into the role. Connecting with members has been a big focus this week and I am impressed with the passion and encouragement coming out of Waimakariri, Selwyn and Christchurch councils (more to come later next week 😉). But it has also been about reflecting on the year and the hard mahi our stakeholders have been through and continue to deliver on. Recovery has been a big theme, with wide scale damage and changing how we react or manage our open spaces. Service delivery models, analytics and data driven research in our fields that stack up against other competing departments, community projects and much more. A lot of it comes back to resilience and what it means in our Parks, Play and Open Spaces networks. How are we delivering resiliency in these areas? Are we helping our communities to become more self aware and resilient along the way? With the LTP’s around the corner there is more work to come and is an opportunity to see how your plans might stack up through the lens of resiliency.
