Stop thinking that raising VC money is the only way. There area vast number of ways to find new businesses but most people think raising VC is their only path. Then they struggle for months and months making very little progress on raising or their business. Here’s a little exercise I did the first time I wanted to raise money for TheoremReach. We were brand new founders. Scarcely out of college. Very new idea - rewarded surveys to bring market research to mobile which was also new and players would get virtual currency for taking them in their favorite apps/games. We wanted to raise a modest $500k. We could barely even get people to take a meeting. We estimated it would take us at least 6 months to close a round. So we did a thought exercise - what would we need to get to $500k/mo in revenue in 6 months? We then quit chasing at VCs and did those things. Within 6 ish months we hit our $500k/mo revenue goals. The point is there are always other options. But I will admit that certain businesses and things are going to be extremely capital intensive and may require VC. But there are so many other options. In gaming, publishers can be a great source of capital. In fact, I know of one game studio that in the future will probably self-publish but on their first game they got paid $100m, enough to fund the studio for 5 years if the first game fails (it didn’t) for taking a publisher deal and this was a good deal for the publisher. But honestly, my favorite option is funding it from real customers. Make something so needed or so wanted that they essentially are giving you money before it’s even out there. That’s a strong indicator that you’re onto something valuable.

EasyEquities introduced a compulsory monthly platform fee! The Thrive loyalty programme will charge all users R25 each month starting from the end of November. If applicable, the R25 fee will be deducted from the customer account with the highest cash balance on the first day of the following month. If none of your EasyEquities accounts has sufficient Free Cash, some or all your investments in your EasyEquities account which has the highest net asset value will be sold to pay for the Thrive Fee. Before the panic sets in, there are a number of ways to mitigate this. Thrive was launched to drive improved investment behaviours, and therefore carrots were also introduced. To avoid the monthly fees, you need to earn 3 Thrive Levels each month. Investors under 21 or over the age of 65 are also exempt from monthly fees. Another benefit to Thrive is the 10% brokerage discounts received on trading 'Thrive Stocks' per Thrive Level in the following month. This means that 3 Thrive Levels equals a 30% discount, 4 Thrive Levels a 40% discount, and so forth... The main question then is, how do you earn Thrive Levels?
