Europe's best-funded generative AI companies have something in common: founders with experience at big US tech firms. Research from Accel found that, of the 10 top-funded genAI startups in Europe & Israel, 60% have founding teams who worked at the big tech giants. Harry Nelis, partner at Accel, explained the reason big tech firms tend to produce genAI founder is because those companies “have been leaning forward in AI the most." “They are really smart in the sense that they have seen how an early lead in this field can lead to a massive competitive advantage,” Nelis told me in an interview. There’s a “golden opportunity” for people with “entrepreneurial mindsets” to make their own genAI ventures, he added.
