Step 1 of getting the Dark Knight look. Film the Dark Knight. Not some idiot in his garden, trying to take a picture before his elderly neighbour, Mary, sees. Then making it a bit blue / cyan. Step 2 of getting the Dark Knight look. Film the Dark Knight somewhere he might hang out. Like a rooftop or cavernous cave. Not near the bogroll in Sainsbury’s. Then making it a bit blue / cyan. Step 3 of getting the Dark Knight look… See where I’m going with this? Contrary to what some people trying to sell you LUTs might say, The grade doesn’t dictate the look of a film. Not by itself, anyway. What you’re shooting, how you’re shooting it, and then the grade on top is what dictates the look of a film. Production design. Lighting. Setting. Etc etc. I’ve never seen a convincing ‘look’ on a film, that didn’t in some way resemble what was there before the grade. Not without a whole lot of VFX, anyway. For example: It's hard to make a scene look like the 70s without filming the fashion, hairstyles and Stuff of the era. The cars, the wallpaper. You don't slap a yellowy-brown filter on everyday footage and go to lunch. The grade enhances or steers what’s already there. You can’t take a Big Mac, mash it flat into a baking dish and tell someone it’s lasagna. Well you can, I guess. But to anyone who knows what they're doing, that's clownshoes behaviour. When the LUT you’re adding is fighting the picture you’re putting it on, it won’t end well. If you want a particular look, get it in camera first.  Or as close as possible. From classic literature adaptations to contemporary films, the versatility of costume design knows no bounds, making it an exciting field to explore and master. 👗 Beyond the aesthetic appeal, delving into costume design has taught me the importance of attention to detail, collaboration, and problem-solving. Every project presents a new set of challenges, from aligning designs with directorial visions to working within budget constraints. However, overcoming these obstacles has fostered resilience and creativity within me, while also fostering a sense of teamwork and camaraderie with fellow designers, directors, and performers. The amount of talented and creative minds that I get to work with everyday is still so surreal to me.

On yesterday’s BBC Breakfast there was an item about the rapid growth of the tattoo removal business, and one of the reasons given was the pressure of corporate culture to comply with certain norms. It was particularly interesting timing as yesterday evening I was getting more ink (big props to super-talented Ryan, pictured). The item brought to mind a post-production project I did a few years ago where I was asked by the client to painstakingly motion-track bare skin over a forearm tattoo on one of their own staff (a totally innocuous geometric design) because they felt it projected the ‘wrong image’. I’ve also had clients reject actors at the audition stage because they’ve believed their tats would be a distraction. I was once privy to the brand guidelines of a major corporate entity that explicitly stated that anyone appearing in photography or video for the business must cover any visible tattoos. I can understand the concerns multinationals might have with their content appearing in countries where tats might be culturally sensitive, but often it seemed to have been a matter of personal taste of an individual involved in the project that would prompt a request to ‘airbrush’ the footage. That said, in our most recent campaign for Foodhub, one of our actors had a really amazing sleeve visible throughout the ad… so maybe that’s a good sign. #tattoo #tattoos #corporateculture #officeculture #corporatebranding #brandguidelines #corporatecommunications

Imagine wandering down a busy street when suddenly your attention is drawn to a movie poster.  You surprisingly discover that, at that instance, you are taken into an emotional realm for a little while. This is the allure of a good movie poster design.  A finely made poster is more than just an invitation; it's a whispered promise of a trip into the raw core of human emotion, urging you to become a part of the story. Creating a movie poster could be a difficult task. It demands a precise balance of creativity, craftsmanship, and narrative. Designers have to compress a two-hour narrative into a single, compelling picture. They must choose colors that evoke emotion, typography that sets the tone, composition that leads our feelings, and ultimately set the viewers' on that journey to become part of the story. When it comes to filming outside, lighting can be incredibly tricky. So, here are a few tips that may help: ◾️ The first key decision in outdoor lighting is knowing where to point the camera relative to the sun, to avoid flat and unpleasing front light. Where possible, try to shoot towards the sun as this will achieve a more flattering backlight and soft facial illumination. ◾️ Try to time your shoot based on the sun’s position to achieve the best lighting. Early morning or late afternoon are usually the better times, depending on the direction you are shooting. ◾️ You can improve facial lighting by using reflectors for bounce light and flags for negative fill - both will help to add contrast and depth to the subject’s face. ◾️ Be mindful of your surroundings as they can cast coloured reflections on the subject, affecting the mood or tone of the shot. The Barbie movie is an incredible example of the 🤯 HUGE NUMBER 🤯 of backstage careers in film 🎬 that we need to celebrate more! The teams involved can provide inspiration for young people thinking about a film career. Here are some of the departments that made the vision happen... ------------------------ 👉 Set design. 130 people. The aesthetic of Barbie is a TREAT. And this is all thanks to the set designers making it happen. A huge team that apparently used to much pink paint they caused a global shortage. 👉 Costume. 74 people. This wasn't just finding fun pink clothes to wear. The brief required the team to research decades of Barbie costumes and painstakingly recreate human-sized versions! 👉 Stunts. 95 people. Loads of body doubles, plenty of choreographed dance moves, even a couple of jumps required. And this kind of work takes a lot of people to do. 👉 VFX. 155 people. The wonderful Framestore (also one of ERIC's longest clients!) created many of the incredible Barbie-tastic special effects - the extra sparkle is absolutely down to the VFX team. 👉 Marketing. Unknown number. I mean, need I say more? The marketing has been OFF THE CHARTS good.
