🪂 #AIRDROPS ARE TERRIBLE INCENTIVES 😢 Not sure why ppl worship #airdrops. They’re very native go-to-market ways in crypto, but aside from some short-lived hype, what’s the retention rate? (Kerman Kohli has a deep dive on this) When projects are add more and more complex rules, trying to target most potential loyal users, but this usually backfires. They end up attracting pro bounty hunters, instead of the intended audience. **If there's profit in a system/rules, someone will game the system.** The key isn’t in the rules but instead, is in the incentives. Designers need to make the incentives valuable within the ecosystem but not worth the effort for bounty hunters to use outside, just like most web2 customer loyalty programs, Starbucks, Hilton, etc.. Surely, some folks flip these perks on secondary platforms like discounted Starbucks or hotel bookings. But in an OTC, P2P market with liquidity issues, transaction costs, and trust factors, it’s not gonna be. appealing enough for pro bounty hunters.

Lufthansa has publicly launched their new NFT loyalty program, Uptrip. How does it work?👇 ✈️ Passengers scan their boarding pass, receive digital collectible cards, and receive rewards when they complete collections. Rewards include including free in-flight Wi-Fi, access to airport lounges, airline miles, and more. ⛓️ Each Uptrip trading card is minted as a unique NFT on Polygon Labs' blockchain on the Uptrip mobile app. 🛫 Lufthansa Group already has 36 million members in its existing airline loyalty program. 🤔 Thoughts and observations Airline loyalty is one of the most established programs across industries with miles, points, upgrades, status tiers, and lounges. It's natural that they are beginning to explore and create full-fledged Web3 loyalty programs to expand touchpoints with their customer base and younger audiences. For me, one notable line from the Uptrip website is: "With Uptrip, you don't need to wait for ages to get your rewards. Every flight you take counts!" Traditionally, airline loyalty members have to accumulate a significant amount of miles to redeem a free flight. Now they can get miles while also getting smaller but still impactful perks. I expect more airlines to come out with their own versions of Uptrip in the ever-important emphasis on retention and engagement. Thoughts on NFTs: 1) In the future, NFTs won't feel like NFTs. For example, tickets will be NFTs, but they won't be called that, they'll just be called tickets. 2) Polygon Labs is leading the way when it comes to partnerships. They've already partnered with firms like Starbucks and Reddit, and now Lufthansa. Their network is super fast & cheap, and they're taking a first-mover advantage in many areas of crypto. 3) Despite all the fluff/noise in the NFT market (especially in the "art" realm), the technology is revolutionary and will grow incredibly moving forward.

web3 loyalty programmes are accelerating, fast. Brands like Lacoste, Louis Vuitton, Adidas, Puma, Nike and others are betting big on blockchain-enabled loyalty strategies. And it makes perfect sense. Creating customer relationships that go beyond the transactional (how most traditional loyalty models are built), and being able to genuinely link fan activity, engagement and creativity to rewards can't be done with web2 tech and infrastructure. However, Eithad's "staking-for-miles" is an interesting new mechanic to incentivise airline members to lock up their NFTs in exchange for flights, upgrades and other perks. I reckon disrupting hospitality and travel with web3 is the next frontier.
