- A matrix organization is big, complicated, and at times, hard to navigate. Coaching within this environment requires specific skills and knowledge. What do I mean by a matrix organization? These companies are normally very large and often multinational. Dual reporting lines make the structure complicated because managers must assume multiple roles within two dimensions. And it can be really tricky to work out roles and responsibilities and to create effective and high-performing teams. The lines of communication aren't always clear, internal politics can be challenging and there's a heavy focus on using personal influence and building strong relationships to get things done. As a manager, you may find yourself coaching team members who report into other people as well as you, or even team members who you guide through projects but aren't actually formally aligned to your reporting line.
